MP3 file sharing advice needed
In the past I have used Napster, Audio Galaxy and Limewire for downloading music/sound files, video and images. I currently have Limewire and am using the freebie version. I am ok with paying for some sort of license or subscription to legally download files of this sort through a site like these, but I don't want to commit a subscription on a site that sux or does not have what I am looking for. I am looking for a site that has a wide variety of files and not just song files from pop/rock artists etc. Limewire offers a wide variety, but the freebie version can often be pretty bad about downloading the files that it locates (they show up in the download window but never really connect to the source).
So anyway, what I am after in this thread is advice, commentary or recommendations on people's experiences using different p2p sharing programs. Anyone? anyone?

Well, I have had the most success recently with eMule. However, it required port forwarding through my router.
I like this one because, although a little slower than Kazaa, and all that stuff, the files on there are what they say they are. i.e. if you download a Van Halen song, it's Van Halen, not a Bon Jovi song or some bloody jpeg advertisement that's been renamed.
Better still, the full albums can be found all zipped up, ready for download.
So yeah, I find I get much better results with eMule that I ever had with any other P2P software, now that I got the port forwarding working.

Thanks for the recommendation Mondy. I will look into eMule. i have no idea what port-forwarding is, but I am sure it is something i need to learn about. And I forgot all about KaZaa. Thanks again dude!

I haven’t tried out any so-called “legal” file sharing sites, but I have a lot of experience using p2p programs.
For the last 8 months or so, I’ve been using a program called eMule. It has the widest availability of different music that I’ve found so far. The only drawback I’ve found is that it seems like you’re uploading a lot more than downloading. It seems if only 7 people have the file you’re looking for, it takes a while to get it.
But something to keep in mind of course is that the RIAA is doing blanket sweeps of the file sharing networks. That means they are tapping into the file sharing networks and grabbing 25-50 IP addresses and then suing all those people at once (whether they are people downloading/uploading so-called copyrighted works or not). The judicial process behind that is constantly changing though, so I don’t if that is still going on.
I’ll grab a song once in a rare while. That’s how I do it (but it’s rare that I actually want a song that is so-called copyrighted.)
So I’d say if you’re using a p2p program, just be careful, and use it rarely, unless you want to end up paying the RIAA 2k or more to settle a lawsuit. Although, your chances of getting struck by lightning is much higher than getting sued by the RIAA, so whatever…

Is LimeWire considered a p2p program?
If so...to get caught...do you have to be downloading/uploading for them to catch you?
I've noticed with these great trading/sharing sites like this, my need to go and use a LimeWire type program has greatly decreased
The RIAA can't go after this type of site, correct?

There are advantages and disadvantages to all of them really.
- emule/edonkey are very good. Like Mondy said, you'll need to set up the ports in your router to get the most out of it though.
- DC++ is also very good but in order to get into the good rooms you must be sharing a huge amount (some rooms reguire 100 Gigs shared and up!)
- torrents are great, but to get the really good stuff you have to register at many forums. But this is a good thing cause it keeps the search engines out.
Try em all and see what works for you. Beware that some ISPs are now filtering the ports that are used by filesharing programs so it may be good to check with your ISP first to see if they are.

To be honest PODster, there are lots of rooms on dc++ that have NO limits to get in...but you very quickly build up your share...I've got 31.7GB at the moment but some people have 100+.

I have about 109gb shared on DC. Before I recently moved and lost my 10mb internet connection it was a dream. Could get almost anything and usually downloaded about 1mb/s.
By the way, isnt there a lot of crap like spyware and viruses and such in programs like kazaa, emule, limewire and so on?

I wish I had printed the screenshot that said "YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED BY METALLICA" (might could sell it on Ebay, LOL) when I was using Napster years ago
just be careful...keep your share file cleared...yet then your not sharing...well keep it to an amount that wont draw attention-still it is a risk as it is illegal

Rather than use p2p there is always the newsgroups. I prefer this method but it costs. If you want to see dl TV, films, games, apps, music and other such stuff the newsgroups are where most of the stuff gets posted first.
The advantages of newsgroups is everything seems to hit there first. when cubase sx3 was hacked it was posted there the same day. Anything new appears on the newsgroups. new films games music etc. Also it will download very quickly. on my 2mb line it is about 3.5 hours for 3GB of downloads. it max's my connection out (but use a newsgroup reader like Grabit or a download accelerator)
The disadvantages are - older stuff is less likely to be posted although people post requests all the time and often get what they want within a few days. all files only have limited retention (which varies depending on which news server you use) and to get reliable downloads you have to pay.
I use www.easynews.com ($9.95 per month) which has a 30 day retention of files and allows you to download 20GB of stuff. Also to make life easier I also use www.newzbin.com (~$2 per month). this lets you download NZB files which act as headers for the larger split files. this makes it easier to download things like dvds and games.
I never thought I would bother with actually paying for a download service but a friend got me onto it and I have to say easynews is the bomb! I am well happy with it
If I want something rare I still use Emule - it is very slow but it gets the job done.
