Just getting to the end of a mad 48 hours. Went to see Rush at Wembley last night with Sir Geordie of Bollox...both mad Rush fans and VERY excited 40 year old children. I've seen em 9 times before and it was Geord's first. Met up and went beer drinking and bowling, which seemed like a good idea until I stood up to leave! Gotta say that the expectation and anticipation was intense. I saw these guys when I was 16 and now I'm 42. I can't think of many bands that have a 30 year history. So what were they like? Looking at the backline is a good place to start...Alex had 3 Hughes and Kettner stacks and Geddy had...2 laundromat washing machines and a snack dispenser! The opening was amazing-I was overwhelmed by this barrage of about 15 Rush songs in 10 minutes...amazing way to start a show that left me with goosebumps. Now these guys did 3 and a quarter hours last night and I have to admit there was stuff that didn't do it for me but hell, these guys are trying to please all the older crowd plus the new devotees...how the fuck can you please everyone??!?!?? I can only describe this gig as like meeting up with old friends after a long break...you've both changed your ideals and you don't see eye to eye on everything but you would be sadder for not having met up. These guys wrote and recorded Xanadu for God's sake!! The majority of the set was superb but some of it left me cold (see above). But when they went into 2112, La
Villa Strangiato (which Alex fucked up!), Bastille Day,
Red Barchetta, YYZ, Working Man, By Tor and the Snowdog, Big Money, Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions etc, the world was a better place for 3 hours...I went because I think it'll be a last goodbye to a band I've admired and respected for 30 years. Cheers guys.
