Rush

I am working on a couple of their tunes now and nothing about any of it is really that easy lol. I have found that it's a lot easier to get a VH tone out of my pod than it is a half way decent Alex Lifeson tone, even their older stuff. Also their time signatures are so dymanic that it's even hard to keep up with on the guitar, it's no wonder they are one of the greatest bands ever. Oh well, back to the grind

Re: Rush

Alex Lifeson has a great guitar sound, especially on "Moving Pictures", "Permanent Waves", ..I like his Gallien Krueger tone on "Hold your Fire"...Alex Lifeson uses a lot of SUS chords, 9ths, etc...."You can here the Andy Summers (Police), type of chord voicings....Back in the early 90's, I covered a lot of Rush, ...I still have my Gallien Krueger 250ml...Great for Rush covers...nice chorus, overdriven tone .."Limelight, Closer to the Heart, Tom Sawyer", were the ones we covered...

Re: Rush

I am currently working on A Passage to Bangkok, the chords are pretty easy but the midi that I disected to use for a backing doesn't really give me much to go off of. It's great for drums and bass (as for midi anyway) but I am having to time it without a metronome so to speak and there are a few gotcha's in that song.

Re: Rush

Great song EricGtr ! Do you have a click track? If you do, it would make things easier for you...Assign one of your MIDI channels to something like a "rimshot", cowbell, ...if you have this in your software, program...Looking forward to hearing the track !

Alex Lifeson is a GOD as far as I'm concerned-soon as you hear him you KNOW it's him...unlike any other guitarist.

Re: Rush

We were going to do the entire overture 2112 piece with Temple of Syrnx, but decided to just do Temple. Our singer fucking mutilated it and the drummer could never remember the count for coming back in... Geddy's vocals are tough to match in the first place though...

Hello "YYZ".

I was a "late bloomer" when it came to Rush- the first album I ever bought of theirs' was "Moving Pictures" back in 1981. But soon after that I was hooked- for a while at least. A few months after getting that, I saved up my lunch money and went out and bought the vinyl "2112", "Permanent Waves" and "Hemispheres". "Exit Stage Left" I got on cassette for some reason that I can't recall.

Those were just awesome albums. I managed to learn the intro to "La Villa Strangiato" on my Yamaha classical - it took me a couple weeks to perfect it. Now I can't even remember what the hell it sounds like. It didn't help that I gave away all my rock albums in the early 90s.

When "Signals" came out I became sort of disappointed in Rush; I love those big, fat Oberheim synths on the album, but I missed all the kewl Lifeson riffs I'd gotten accustomed to with their previous releases. By the time "Grace Under Pressure" came out I was well into heavier stuff like the then burgeoning L.A. bands I'd hung out with- Ratt, W.A.S.P., Crue, Armored Saint, Dokken, etc... so all the synthetic textures on Rush's subsequent stuff unfortunately turned me off to them ever since.

I've only listened to a few cuts off "Grace..." and I like them more now than I did back then. In particular, I really dig Alex's guitar sound on "Red Sector A"- it's very dynamic and goes from a shimmering chorus clean to creamy overdrive from one measure to another. What gear did he use on that tune and that album? Was that the GK250 ML or was "Grace..." recorded before the amp was even available (1984)?

I haven't listen to much newer Rush, but I heard Alex is using a Hughes & Kettner backline... and they're playing more of those intricate riffs.

Anyhow, Rush is great. I'm glad they're back on the map.

And sorry to bore youse all.

Didn't bore me at all man...pretty similar story here only I lasted until 'Grace Under Pressure' which I think is an awesome album but having been absolutely mad on them, it started to wane when I thought they lost it somewhat. BUT, I'm now listening to albums like 'Hold Your Fire' and 'Throw The Bones' and liking them. The one thing is there is SO much to listen too and Rush (like Dream Theater) are a nightmare live cos you don't know who to watch! In fact, even tho' I'm a guitarist I used to always end up watching Peart as he was a sight to fucking behold in full flight. Portnoy is the same...awesome.

Thanks for your hospitality, Chris. I should give some new Rush a listen.

Dream Theater is awesome. My ex bass player in Vegas lent me his "Falling Into Infinity" CD a few years back. I managed to learn "Peruvian Skies" before I quit playing altogether. I do like the drummer and bassist in that band more than I'm into Pettruci though... and the keyboardist annoys me for some reason. *IMO* I don't like hearing fast guitar leads doubled with synths - that's a big part of why I stopped listening to Wengie. But that's just me.

Forgive me for bringing back an old thread.

No one really talks much anymore, and my threads go ignored.

Alex Lifeson is defiantly a sick guitarist. Listen to all of "2112" (the song), and you will see what I mean. It's rare that someone's riffs are as enticing as their solos, and he takes the award for that.

I haven't got all of the Rush albums yet, as I am also a Richard Thompson fanatic at the moment, but I have most of the early stuff. Rush through Moving Pictures, you know. He never gets boring, and I'm glad he kept getting better each album. Of course, his work on Working Man is pretty solid.

As for his tone, of course, it's orgasmic.

Rush is one of the greatest bands ever. Musicianship of all parts were second to none. No one seems to appreciate it as much anymore. As a fan of high levels of musicianship, it seems that it takes a creative and intelligent mind to appreciate progressive, complicated compositions. In other words...the smart people like it LOL!
