Steve Augieri Out Of Journey!!! Jeff Scott Soto In!
Thanks to www.melodicrock.com for the following:
JOURNEY: STEVE AUGERI RETURNS HOME - JEFF SCOTT SOTO FLIES IN:
Steve Augeri has stepped down as lead vocalist for Journey on their current tourand has returned home. This follows recent reports of vocal problems. His last show for this tour was in Raleigh, NC on Tuesday night.
During recent shows he has struggled with his voice and as I understand, he was aware before the show that this would be his last performance of this tour.
Although plagued with problems from the outset of the show, Steve handled himself with dignity and grace and has to be applauded for his contribution to the band and the manner in which he has handled himself.
Jeff Scott Soto, Neal Schon's bandmate in Soul SirkUS has flown in to meet up with the rest of the band and will make his debut Friday night in Bristow, VA.
A statement has been prepared by Journey management:
JOURNEY FORCED TO MAKE LEAD SINGER CHANGE ON NATIONWIDE TOUR
"Jeff Scott Soto to assume JOURNEY lead singer duties starting on July 7th in Bristow, VA due to Steve Augeri throat infection.
Due to a chronic throat infection, Journey's lead singer, Steve Augeri, has been forced to leave the band's current nationwide tour with Def Leppard. Jeff Scott Soto, who has previously performed with Journey guitarist Neal Schon, will assume the band's lead singer duties starting with the July 7th show in Bristow, VA. Steve Augeri's condition will be closely monitored by his physician to determine when he may be able to rejoin the tour.
According to Journey, "Steve's been suffering with an acute throat condition since before we kicked off the tour with Def Leppard. We were hoping he'd be in well condition to handle the rigors of the road but unfortunately it appears to be a chronic condition requiring total voice rest. We all wish Steve a speedy recovery."

I like Jeff scott soto. I hated Steve Augerie. He was like a female steve perry to me. Really in touch with his feminine side. too much for my taste.

Just did mate...no-one's gonna tell me Steve wasn't/isn't a great singer. I have the Tall Stories tracks and they were what made Schon pick up the phone.
Kinda sad...never got the recognition; always a stand-in for Perry (who is the reason Journey hadn't been to the UK since 1980...gimme a band with a singer who will travel-it helps!)

I agree mate - the Tall Stories stuff is great as well as the Journey stuff with him, but it don't look good. The JSS rumour about him replacing SA has been doing the rounds for over a year now though and even JSS was very cagey about it all when I spoke to him last year after his gig at Trillians.
For what it's worth, I think SA has had throat problems for some time and the rest of the guys have given him every chance to see if it will heal. Looks like he needs specialist help and rest though. Hope he gets sorted 'cos he is a great singer

Jeff worked with Neil in Soul Cirkus , i can see it working for the tour but after that i think its anybodies guess who gets the job . I always thought Aggy struggled with the high end , his voice thinned out a lot , great singer , but pushed to the limits by the Perry Legacy .

Neal is very loyal (Dean Castanova kept the drumseat after his Bad English days) and Soul Sirkus were doing Journey stuff the night I went to see them. He has a fine voice and it'd be good if THIS time they didn't just try to find someone with a samey voice as Perry...it worked with Augieri (and I ain't gonna put him down as the Tall Stories album is in my Top 5 ever) but it won't again.

I can see this being the end of the road for Journey. JSS is a great vocalist but there is no way he is going to keep up with them Perry vocal lines. I personally thought Augeri was as close to Perry as they got and if he can't make it back then there is no other choice for Journey.

Not sure about JSS not being able to keep up with the Perry lines - he's pretty damn good but with a different twist....

jss is a great singer but not a replacement for journey. some singers are not replaceable. to me steve perry gave journey a signature sound and can't be replaced even by auguri. you cant replace guys like lou gramm with foreigner, brad delp with boston, hell you can't replace karen carpenter. lol. although i love neil schon, it was perry that made journey what it was with his signature voice

I think the guys in Journey have a hard time trying to make this 'he's irreplaceable' go away. Perry was awesome but he wouldn't tour? What's the point in that? A band we had to wait nearly 30 years to see again here in the UK.
Trying to replace Perry with a soundalike was a wrong move tho I'll back Augieri all the way as he is a class singer-(taking into consideration his vocal problems and if he gets better). He was ready to call it a day when he got a call from Neal Schon...he was back as a Joiner working at Macy's in New York I believe. I just wish people would look at the fact that (amazing vocals or not), Journey are 5 individuals and all bring something to the table. Would it be Journey without Schon's melodic guitar? Or Cain's keyboard lines and writing skills? They have replaced other members before (Priarie Prince for Steve Smith, Greg Rolie for Cain, Smith for Castranova etc). If people are honestly saying there'd rather there was NO band because the singer is irreplaceable, I think that's sad.

I'm a massive Journey fan, have been since I was about 2 or 3 years old. I fell in love with Journey because of Perry, and I continue to love Journey without him. Steve Augeri's done a great service to the band over the last 8 years, but I think this "tapegate" scandal's the begninng of the end. Journey management haven't commented on it all and then the board administrator closed and deleted a thread last night after I posted something about it. Kinda says it all to me really. On JSS I think he's doing the best job he can possibly do given the circumstances, but if Journey want to carry on, then they have to sort themselves out after this tour.
