Question

Todays generation of bands "wheres the solos gone"

K i find that in todays generation punk bands and that emo/screamo crap is invading the music industry. I find that the music is getting so simple and dull that it just is going to die in the ass. Not all bands though there are the legends like joe sat etc etc. But what has happened to the solos. The one thing i enjoy when i pick up an album is to listen to the solos because there the most inspiring part to me. And this american/australian idol crap its like music has become disposable, when you look back into the 80's 70's 90's etc music had feeling and were classics even to this day. but now its just straight 5th chords with practically no rythm. this is just my opinion but do any of use see where im coming from. please complain acordingly!

Most modern rock bands or nu-metal band guitar players couldn't play a ripping solo if their life depended on it. Rock is too simple now, no lead fills, no cool riffs, no solos, no harmonies and the singers all sound the same. Thank God I have an extensive CD collection of 80's Metal and 70's Hard Rock.

Yeah, I agree with you! I have tried to stay "hip" but now prefer to use the cds as clay pigeons! Its like all you have to do anymore is droptune your guitar and wank out some one finger chords but, somebody in the industry decided this is cool and pumped it so there ya go! Clone the mundane, its cool! (for now) I will say I picked up Disturbeds latest (10,000 Fists) and it is the coolest new stuff I've heard in awhile! Thats why I like sites like this, lots of great players that don't compromise, just play from the heart and mind!

Yeah, Disturbed is an exception..these guys rock. Great riffs and solos...what a concept huh? I listen to some modern bands that play more "80's style Metal", these bands are out there, just have to search for 'em. F*ck the radio unless "Dee Snider's House of Hair show is on!".

i agree with everything that's been said.

i mean, im sure there's some talented musicians out there, who know how to play their instruments, but the vast majority of them sure aint' getting air time.

i rarely listen to the radio these days either. the one exception to that, is that one of the local rock channels has a 5 hour section on saturday nights where they play nothing but 80's metal, hair metal, all the cool stuff from the 80's with guitarists who actually solo.

besides that^, ive been pretty much living off my satriani/vai/becker/friedman cd's --- the stuff i never get sick of listening to.

i hope sometime in this decade popular music takes a shift and bands who know how to play their instruments make a comeback and get air time. sure, i can still find plenty of great guitar oriented music to listen to regardless, but it would be cool to turn on the radio and hear it, or to plug in your guitar and play in front of your (non-guitar playing) friends and have them actually appreciate what it is you are doing.

peace

it could be a possibility too that alot of the modern guitarists you hear are actually monsters when they arent playing with their bands..

Well i haven't heard too much that impressed me as of late.
Slipnot has a couple cool solos, as well as Shadows Fall.
It just seems that the singing sux on much of the new stuff, as cookie monster impersonators.

Arrrrrghhhh!

yeah the soloing i like to hear is cacophony and stuff that takes you off your feet and glues you to the speakers but today its as if well you play solos sorry we wont have you. im only 15 and i see this new generation of crap its like aids every kid is like wow man do you know that song by the used its soo complex and i just think man if i saw the used live i would get scales and modes book jump on the fuckin stage make them retards learn something. something of usage to there girly lil minds. and it really sucks coz i try jam with these people and i just cant. even a basic 12 bar blues rythm and just jaming with a pentatonic scale over the top. they dont even know what a scale is! it drives me nuts if i want to jam with someone they at least have to be 25 years or older and it really really sucks.(not having to jam with older people just the fact these people cant play for crap.)

Well, things do seem to be in a sad state at the moment, but music has always been cyclical, and solos are beginning to make a comeback. Patience grasshopper, it will get there.

forget radio. if you want to hear solos and great guitarists you found them. they are right here. i feel that in the future all you young guys that are learning the right scales and techniques will be ready when the guitar orentied music scene comes back. a agree that in the 90s that guitarists never learned how to play well enough to solo. it will come around again

glad to see I'm not alone in thinking music on the modern radio is absolute s**t and I haven't listened to modern rock radio in probably 10 years. My personal opinion is there is a reason you don't hear solos and that's because they can barely play their instrument. I'm glad to be a part of this forum of with you guys who have a passion for the instrument and who want to always improve their playing.

I don't listen to modern rock radio, or watch MTV. I rarely even turn on the tv. But, I have noticed a declining quality in new bands. That light punk, ''screamo'' or ''emo'' is just terrible. I think it's all very mediocre at best, and there's no one writing great riffs or melodies nowadays.
Alot of my friends make fun of the fact that I listen to the Darkness. lol But they're about the only new mainstream band whose albums I can tolerate all the way through.
