Some of my favorites:
JACK BRUCE - for leading my people out of Egypt, where we used to build pyramids for guitiarists. Seriously, he was the guy who threw off the chains that confined the rock bassist to roots and fifths. His playing is deleriously Id-driven - he's completely in the moment, and has no idea what's gonna come off his fingers. He has such mastery of his instrument that he can play with that sort of abandon with utter confidence that he won't ever drop the ball.
COLIN HODGKINSON - few know who he is, but he can humble any bassist who hears him. He's best heard as part of his band BACK DOOR, where he occupies all the space that exists between a trap set and an alto sax. Also with Alexis Korner, Spencer Davis, and even Whitesnake. Far and away the greatest bassist of whom I am aware, in terms of both skill and imagination.
GLENN CORNICK - on the first three Tull albums (the ones with good bass on them), and later with Wild Turkey (a fantastic and forgotten band) and Paris. A very clever player, and one who clearly, audibly loves playing bass.
LARRY TAYLOR / GEEZER BUTLER / LEO LYONS - there's some sort of a common element in their playing, and whatever it is, it's always appealed to me.
(..and there's always Stevie Wonder's left hand...)
