Peter Gabriel-era Genesis Rory Gallagher
Roy Buchanan
King Crimson (outside of 1rst record and 81's Discipline, not given much due)
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush (check out World Anthem)
1. Cheap Trick - there's a heckuva lot more to them besides "I Want You To Want Me" or "The Flame". The fact that they are still out there workin' it with all original members and their current albums are still consistently strong are only two bits of testimony to this band's staying power. If you still don't believe me then, by all means, see them when they come to your town and they'll make you a believer.
2. Thin Lizzy - This band should have been as big here in the States are they were in Europe. The talent in that band was unstoppable and if anybody dares question this all they need to do is listen to "Live & Dangerous".
3. Angel - why this band ever had the success they deserved is beyond me. When they rocked they rocked hard and even their later albums (I'm talkin' about "Sinful" here) when they became more of a pop-rock band contained many gems. The comparisons to Kiss were completely unnecessary and undeserving.
4. Hanoi Rocks - OK, maybe not as classic as some might wish to consider "Classic Rock" but their influence to the whole Glam/Sleaze/Hard Rock scene cannot be denied. If it wasn't for Hanoi Rocks then there never would have been Guns N Roses.
5. Girl - OK, some might put me thru the ringer for this one and many others might be asking "WHO?" but they were certainly a band before their time. They were dismissed by many due to their look but those who took the time to actually listen to them realized that they were more than just another pretty face. Like Hanoi Rocks, they should have been bigger than they were. Especially in the US.
Definitely Frank Zappa, he was popular for certain songs, but no one seems to be familiar with his more experimental aspects. I'd add Fripp of King Crimson to the list too, he was a fine player too.

Golden Earring! Nobody knows anything but Twilight Zone and, of course, the extremely overplayed Radar Love. But they made a lot of great music in the 70's and early 80's, stuff better than either of those songs, and it's a damned crime that they're not heard and appreciated. At least not here in the US, anyway.
Frank Zappa, yeah, most people just think "that weird guy that wrote dirty songs", but they're missing so much...
Blue Oyster Cult never seems to get their due, either.
And I'm sure I can come up with two more if I think about it for a few minutes...
Yeah, Frank Zappa is definitely under-rated and commonly under-appreciated.
Rush and Triumph the two Canadian trios that comes to mind.
I'd probably also throw King Krimson down on the list as well.
And definitely Allen Holdsworth, though I'm not too sure that he falls under the "Classic Rock" genre.
But really, you cant narrow it down to a minute list of five. There are hundreds, even thousands of artists
who deserve more recognition then they are given.

QUEEN-70's stuff is totally underrated and overlooked besides the hits, their strenght were in great albums, not just good singles and that's the reasons i put them on this list. thank god they are more appreciated now than they were 10 or 20 years ago but do we really have to wait another 20 years for them to get the credit they deserve?
WINGS-totally overlooked, almost nobody mentions them when you talk about 70's rock, band on the run album, come on people, great stuff! the best paul mccartney era after the beatles are 70's with wings
BAD COMPANY-another great rockers from the 70's, brilliant stuff, especially first 2 albums, they are often overlooked, even Free gets more credit although they are also underrated
AC DC-only 70's ac dc are underrated, you can always hear 3 or 4 bands mentioned when someone talks about 70's and they are sabbath, zeppelin, purple and queen or pink floyd but nobody mentions ac dc and they were great in the 70's
ACCEPT-the most underrated metal band ever! everybody talks about priest, maiden, metallica and so on but nobody gives them the credit they deserve, they were much better than most more popular heavy bands of the 80's and you can't say they aren't influential

I think that Death could have become so much bigger had competition like slayer not been around. Also, Megadeth had so much better songs than their radio played stuff like "Peace Sells" and Symphony of Destruction". How about some "Angry Again", "She-Wolf", "Skin 'O My Teeth", "Ashes In Your Mouth". It's a neverending list. Even Queen is higly overrated. At least everything but like 3 songs that are always overplayed like "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Are The Champions", and of course..."We Will Rock You". What ever happened to "Fat Bottom Girls", "Tie Your Mother Down", "Stone Cold Crazy", and "Brighton Rock". Songs like that really made Queen awesome for me!

A band Nobody seems to know was The Sensational Alex Harvey band. Every time I introduce anyone to their music they cant believe they hadn't heard them. They rocked!!
the reason Creedence broke up was because initially john fogerty was the sole songwriter. Then the others wanted to contribute. It didn't work.

I really think that their progressive/glam era (1973-77) was their finest for heavy, and creative music. I could write forever about this group...When it comes to English Rock, you don't get any better than them, IMHO.
PROCOL HARUM- Yet another fine English rock band whose career is seen today as a one hit wonder with "Whiter Shade of Pale." These guys also made kick ass progressive and classically influenced rock. They were at their peak when Robin Trower was with them.
THE BAND- Really great music, IMO...the best band, aside from Rush; That has Canadian musicians (4 out of the original 5 members were Canadian). These guys went from dive bars and honky tonks, to stadiums and arenas. Great renaissance musicians. Its a shame Robbie turned out the way he did.
QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE- These guys really were like the best kept secret in San Fransisco. The big acts known while they were "active" were Big Brother & Holding Company, The Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane...dare I say it; But I believe, that Quicksilver Messenger Service was better than those groups. Way better. The only person that was in this group that lasted after the band dissolved was Nicki Hopkins. Who did studio work for everyone...most notably the Stones ("Sympathy for the Devil").
CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL- One of the great country rock bands. They never made anything less than a solid album. What a cryin' shame they got screwed by Fantasy Records, and had to subsequently leave. I think they would've stuck around into at least the early/mid 80's.
