I had to post this one, I was a little surprised I didn't see it on the list yet.
The band Riot
Fire down under is all good but one of my favorite songs is SWORDS AND TEQUILA
CHECK IT OUT ON YOU TUBE http://youtube.com/watch?v=7I5rXafwg...elated&search=
There is also a live recording on youtube but not the greatest quality
This is easy: THE KINKS! People know these guys for three maybe four songs (You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, Lola and Come Dancing). There are alot better songs out there by these guys (The entire Village Green album, most of their 60s stuff which was comparable in terms of lyrics amd innovation to the Big Three [Stones, Beatles, and Who], Muswell Hillbillies [20th Century man is a great song, the list goes on).
I heard of them, because a friend gave a loan of their album years ago. I forget the name of it, but "tomorrow belongs to me" was on it.
What did i think of it. I forget, but I think i had a positive reaction.

The velvet underground. They sold very little records, yet
the have probably influenced more bands than any other.
The Buzzcocks crazy horse-a great band, but recognised more as the band neil young plays with now and again. Although on the Jim
Jarmusch movie, Neil said that it was never Neil young and
crazy horse, but just crazy horse.
The sugarcubes
oh yeah.
The Band. They were another big influence. Clapton wanted to join them, and it was the reason he started Derek and the dominos
gram parsons; he made it okay to like country music
Yes village green was a flop, but now seen as a classic.

Since I grew up in THAT era, let's seee if I have enough brain cells left, to think of 5 classic rock bands. To me, classic rock is defined as the late 60s thru the 70s, before DISCO came along and screwed things up with that frivolous, mindless, crap. Here goes my picks:
Cactus - best drum and bass in the business. They were full blown back in the days when they were Vanilla Fudge, and are the founders of the modern heavy drums and bass. Check out their first 3 albums. Jim McCarty gets a nodd for underrated guitar player. Formerly of the Detroit Wheels, before hooking up with Carmen Appice, and Tim Bogert to form Cactus, along with the former Rusty Day.
Grand Funk Railroad - I agree with previous post about them. I STILL listen to their stuff (and Cactus as well).
Trapeze - although I absolutely hate their first album, their next 3 are fantastic.
Wishbone Ash - Twin guitar founders. They had some success, but not nearly to the degree they deserve, IMHO. They have heaps of albums, and not too much I don't like. Pat Travers - Great guitarist and songwriter. Lots of variety. He covered so many genres trying to get something to catch on, but never achieved huge success.
(runners up: Jo Jo Gunne, Blackfoot, Foghat, UFO, Poco, CCR, Free)
Real quick and in no particular order: Thin Lizzy, Y&T, UFO, Hanoi Rocks and Heaven. I'm sure there's a few I'm forgetting but these are the ones that come to mind right now.

One hell of a band, I've seen them loads in 70's, and have got several of their albums. Also what about his brothers band....Stone the Crows... another great band. I was at the Swansea gig, the night Les Harvey died by electrocution from his microphone.
Kansas you can say is pretty underrated...Sure "Carry On My Wayward Son" was a big hit, but you don't hear to much of them anymore. They had plenty of other good songs...

Status Quo are very underated considering they have been together now 40 years and average 120 or more gigs every year, they have played over 6000 gigs in their career and have sold 100 million + albums. I see them several times every year and still one of the loudest bands around, their gear set up is impressive as well. Long may they rock.
