In the July issue of Southwest Airlines magazine, Spirit, Van Halen's debut album was listed as the most underrated Hard Rockin' '70s album in "The Underrated List".
Here's what they said:
"Revisionist common knowledge tells us that The Clash's "London Calling" was the greatest album of the 70's. But Van Halen's revolutionary 1978 debut was bigger, faster, stronger, and way more influential. It sold five times more copies than London Calling. It gave us "Ice Cream Man". Half its tracks still rock the radio every day in this country. Why do you think when Michael J. Fox played music from the future in Back to the Future he blasted an "Eruption" -style solo?"
Damn straight and thank God they didn't use "eponymous debut."
It wasn't "eponymous"?

It's definitely an under rated album in todays musical world. Most people like to try and forget about the 80's hard rock and metal that van halen inspired.
That first one made us twist our little minds up back then....simply a smack in your face...who could not love it??
It is still one of my very much played albums...1978 is along time ago

Ya think?Seems like MTV and VH1 are picking those bands to death these days.Almost to their ruination as far as the younger generation is concerned..It seems like they try to make a joke of the whole genre
Anybody who says all metal is garbage simply doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean of course there are the crappy metal bands but there are those in all genres of music.

Eddie set a new paradigm with Eruption that has never been broken. There were some who came close, but nobody quite did it. IMHO, the level of intensity in his playing goes beyond anything I have ever heard to date.
