TRENT REZNOR: TAPEWORM Is Dead
Source: BLABBERMOUTH
NINE INCH NAILS mastermind Trent Reznor has officially confirmed in an online posting that the much-hyped TAPEWORM project — which was to feature contributions from A PERFECT CIRCLE/TOOL frontman Maynard Keenan and PANTERA's Phil Anselmo, among others — will probably never see the light of day. Asked by a fan for an update on the project, Reznor wrote on nin.com, "TAPEWORM is dead for the foreseeable future. Let me try to explain as honestly as possible.
"TAPEWORM wound up being about Maynard, Danny [Lohner], Atticus [Ross] and me working collaboratively together. I provided some music I'd been working on as a starting point and we began. Atticus and I would work on music, Maynard and Danny would show up when Maynard could around TOOL's tour. We worked on a number of tracks and had Josh Freese [A PERFECT CIRCLE] play drums.
"Eventually, however, things got in the way. Managers, lawyers, record companies, [A PERFECT CIRCLE] needs and frankly my own enthusiasm for the material came into play to work against the project seeing the light of day. The bottom line is this: If the music had been great, all of this probably could have been worked out.
"Maynard is a dear friend and a great singer and writer. I'm sure we will work together in some capacity, but the planets were not aligned for that project. My apologies for getting people excited about it — but I was, too."

BOSTON LINE UP NEW DATES AND LIVE DVD:
Source: MELODICROCK
Classic rockers Boston have announced dates for their 2004 summer tour. The band will play concerts in 21 cities they were unable to reach last year, when they embarked on their first tour in six years.
Founding songwriter/guitarist/producer Tom Scholz will once again reunite with original lead singer Brad Delp on the trek, which commences July 13 at the Civic Center in Glens Falls, N.Y.
Joining Scholz and Delp will be Kimberley Dahme (bass, vocals), Anthony Cosmo (guitar, vocals), Fran Cosmo (vocals, guitar), Gary Pihl (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Jeff Neal (drums, vocals).
Although the band has never made a music video or performed on television, they're planning on documenting their wildly popular live show with a concert video/DVD to be filmed this summer.
Their latest album, Corporate America, was released in late 2002. The band is currently in the studio working on new material, where several of the new members are contributing as songwriters.
[For the record - I have no updates as to whether any new songs are actually being worked on - but there was a report Tom was re-mixing the album for a re-release. Stay tuned...]

THE DARKNESS SNARE MUTT LANGE!:
Source: MELODICROCK
From UK music journal NME - boy, did this one take me by surprise!
The Darkness have recruited legendary producer Robert "Mutt" Lange to produce the follow-up to their mega-selling debut CD, Permission to Land, according to NME.com.
Lange, who is married to country/pop superstar Shania Twain, has previously produced a number of classic rock albums from such artists as AC/DC, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams and Foreigner.
- Now this is a real shocker - Mutt's returning to rock n roll producing and it's The Darkness that have secured him! Wow, all I can say is good luck to The Darkness! I remain a fan of their music, but still think the singer needs major surgery! Perhaps Mutt can tame him long enough to prove that the band aren't just taking the piss. It looks like the guys won't be known as one album wonders and the bottom line is the fact that this is a huge vote of confidence in the band by their record label, as Mutt does not come cheaply!

VH1 Counts Down 100 Most Metal Moments In Five-Night Special
Source: Blabbermouth
MOTÖRHEAD, W.A.S.P.'s Blackie Lawless, POISON's Bret Michaels, former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach, ANTHRAX, L.A. GUNS, KISS, ex-MÖTLEY CRÜE singer Vince Neil, Ronnie James Dio and FASTER PUSSYCAT are among the artists featured in "100 Most Metal Moments", a VH1 special focusing on the "entertaining (and sometimes shocking) moments" that defined heavy metal music's heyday.
"100 Most Metal Moments" premieres on Monday, May 31 at 10:00 pm with the ultimate countdown of these outrageous hard rock moments in a five-night special. Narrated by the always outrageous Dee Snider ( TWISTED SISTER), this special reveals who shredded a live chicken onstage, who won a gross out contest with Nikki Sixx and more in each one-hour episode.
"100 Most Metal Moments" continues the tradition of VH1's "100 Greatest" series of specials which debuted with "100 Greatest Artists of Rock and Roll" in March of 1998.
"100 Most Metal Moments" is executive produced by Michelle Mahoney and Meredith Ross for VH1.
100 Most Metal Moments: The Big Ten:
01. "Hear N' Aid"
The biggest names in metal, from JUDAS PRIEST to MÖTLEY CRÜE, come together in a charity recording and video for starving people in Africa. It's rumored that pop charity types don't approve, but the song and video for "We're Stars" stands as a stirring tribute to all things metal.
02. BLACK SABBATH
The fingerless man of BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi gets two fingertips cut off in an industrial accident, but still goes on to invent the sound of heavy metal guitar with BLACK SABBATH, thanks to a few prosthetic digits.
03. DIO
One-time BLACK SABBATH frontman and solo artist Ronnie James Dio gives birth to heavy metal sign language when he popularizes the now-ubiquitous metal devil horns sign.
04. MÖTLEY CRÜE
MÖTLEY CRÜE release "The Dirt", metal's first true tell-all biography, depicting in graphic detail the band's relentless quest for pleasures of the flesh.
05. SPINAL TAP
Metal parody "Spinal Tap" is released, adding such things as amps that go to 11 and undersized models of Stonehenge to metal lore.
06. JUDAS PRIEST/Rob Halford
Much to the surprise of mulleted JUDAS PRIEST fans everywhere, frontman Rob Halford comes out of the closet.
07. Ozzy Vs. Nikki Sixx
Ozzy Osbourne and MÖTLEY CRÜE's Nikki Sixx engage in a revolting clash of the titans while touring together in the early '80s. The battle begins with Ozzy snorting a line of live ants and ends with him drinking Nikki's urine.
08. Groupies Unite @ Metal Sludge Chart
The dedicated female followers of metal rate the manhood of metal gods on a web site. They give actual measurements, all in an effort to spread the word on which stars are worth the trouble of getting backstage to consort with.
09. LED ZEPPELIN
The infamous incident allegedly involving LED ZEPPELIN, a groupie and a small marine creature sets the standard by which all metal debauchery would be measured.
10. DEF LEPPARD/Rick Allen's Arm
A triumph of the metal spirit as DEF LEPPARD's Rick Allen, recovering from a tragic accident, becomes metal's first one-armed drummer.

ZAKK WYLDE: Original Demo Recording Used To Land OZZY Gig Posted Online
Source: Blabbermouth
Zakk Wylde fan site SDMFworldwide.com has uploaded the 1987 recording that got Zakk the job playing for OZZY OSBOURNE. Here's the story of the demo tape, by the man who recorded it, Jim Matlosz:
"Back in the summer of '87, I was hanging with Zakk and [his previous band] ZYRIS. I used to work as Zakk's guitar tech at the time, my plan was to trade the work for guitar lessons, problem was I didn't have the discipline and again the money to buy a real guitar, still cant play to this day. Anyway, every Saturday night, we would go to Close Encounters where ZYRIS would headline, Playing at times with EDGAR CAYCE (side band for PROPHET) along with some other acts, I remember them playing with SKID ROW before Sebastian, (I think it was Dave Feld who put SKID ROW and Sebastian together).
"Anyway, the story on the demo… Zakk calls me one night and says Ozzy is looking for a guitar player and he needs to put together a demo. We borrowed a 4-track cassette recorder from Zakk's friend Rich (can't remember his last name) we got together on a rainy night (on the classical piece what sounds like noise is actually rain on the outside basement metal door, which we actually put a mic on to add to the mix) and went over to the basement where ZYRIS rehearsed and recorded the demo.
"After Zakk got the Ozzy gig, Barb (his wife) told me he wanted me to be his guitar tech. Many others would have jumped at the opportunity, but I had to decline, I had one opportunity to go to college and fulfill my dreams and I had to pursue it. Who knows where I would be now if I had taken the opportunity, but I have no complaints. I would stay in touch with Zakk and Barb, over the next 5 years or so, driving Barb to LaGuardia airport to pick up Zakk at some crazy time of night when he would return from England...meeting up with them whenever we had the time. After college graduation, I packed up my bags and moved to California... Zakk and Barb offered me a place to stay. When Zakk returned from tour, I went off and got my own place, and began working as a cameraman in visual effects for feature films. I worked some crazy hours and had no time to socialize, so our lives drifted apart. I ran into Barb at a show Zakk was doing at The Troubadour in LA a few years ago and that is the last I have seen or heard from them. His life and career have been pretty easy to track, I've been listening to the music he's been making over the years, and can't believe how far he has come and changed.
"So 17 years go by, I had the master tape in a box the whole time with about 100 other cassettes. A good friend of mine asked me one day what a 4-track cassette recorder was worth on eBay, I said I don't know, about 10 bucks, but can I borrow it before you sell it. So I dug up the tape and asked a friend of mine who works as a recording engineer for movie trailers, if he would mind digitizing the demo in Protools and remixing it. He agreed and a few months later handed me the mixdown on CD as well as the Protools stems. I saw the bootleg page on Zakk's site, and figured the fans would be interested."

Korn At The Krossroads: Band Explores Options In 'Dying' Music Biz
Source: MTV
Jonathan Davis calls Korn's next single "a very personal song," but it's not as different from the anti-music-industry tirade "Y'all Want a Single?" as one might expect.
"It's about feeling like you've ... lost everything," Davis said of "Everything I've Known," the third single from Take a Look in the Mirror. "I was having problems with my girl, problems with my family, problems businesswise — not problems within the band internally, but things going on outside. I just felt like I was losing everything I'd known around me, because basically, I am. I mean, me and my girl made up and everything's fine, but the music business is dying."
While "Y'all Want a Single?" is a smartass response to the commercialization of music, "Everything I've Known" is, at least partially, an emotional reaction to the ailing music business. "I feel so enslaved," Davis sings at one point. "F--- my pride."
"It's a scary time for us in the music industry," Davis said, sitting behind the board at his home studio. "It is going to die. There's no way around it. A new model has to come out, things have to change. It's not like, 'OK, spend a gazillion dollars on making an album, go shoot a video, put it on MTV' — that's just not happening anymore. So that's a big, scary jump for us, and we've got to think of different ways to do this."
In the fall Korn will release a greatest-hits collection, which will fulfill their seven-album deal with Epic Records. The album may include the band's forthcoming collaboration with Lil Jon, slated to be recorded next week. It's unlikely the band will re-sign with Epic or any major label.
"We're assessing things," Davis said. "Basically, all our record company ever did was box and ship, and now we're at the point with the Internet where we can basically do that ourselves. I mean, we don't have that endless supply of money from the record company, but if we do it smart, we might actually be able to make some money and not rip our fans off by charging 25 bucks for a CD. [Instead, we'd charge] $7 or $8 and try to make it better for the fans, 'cause kids will go buy music if it's good and at the right price. But if they feel like they're getting ripped off, why not download it?"
Davis said that no major band has so far created a model business plan for functioning independently, but he thinks Orgy are on the right track.
"They're doing it on their own," he said of the band, which just released an album on its own label after leaving Warner Bros. (with whom Orgy first signed via Korn's Elementree imprint, no longer affiliated with Warner). "They're getting all of [the profits from album sales], and they're out on the road right now touring. I think that's great."
Davis has grown even more disenchanted with the music industry through trying to sign the Drama, a new band whose album he just finished producing.
"I'm trying to get them not to fall into that, 'Oh, we want to get the big money' [attitude] because that's all owed [back to the record company that paid it]," Davis said. "It's like, 'Let's do this album cheap, let's get you out on the road and forget about the album sales until the new model comes out. Let's get you big so you can make some money on T-shirts and concerts.' That's how we make our money. We never made money on our records. That's the biggest scam in the world."

RUSH Drummer Explains Reasons For Recording Cover EP
Source: BLABBERMOUTH
Canadian trio RUSH have confirmed plans to release an EP collection of covers of classics popularized by THE WHO, CREAM, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD and THE YARDBIRDS. Due June 29 via Atlantic, the eight-track "Feedback" marks the first time the group has ever recorded material by other artists.
"[Bassist] Geddy [Lee], [guitarist] Alex [Lifeson] and I were channeling back to 1966 and 1967, when we were 13- and 14-year-old beginners," drummer Neil Peart writes in the album's liner notes. "We thought it would be a fitting symbol to commemorate our 30 years together if we returned to our roots and paid tribute to those we had learned from and were inspired by. We thought we might record some of the songs we used to listen to, the ones we painstakingly learned the chords, notes and drum parts for, and even played in our earliest bands."
"Feedback" (View Cover Here) track listing:
01. Summertime Blues (EDDIE COCHRAN)
02. Heart Full Of Soul (THE YARDBIRDS)
03. The Seeker (THE WHO)
04. For What It's Worth (BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD)
05. Mr. Soul (BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD)
06. Shapes Of Things (THE YARDBIRDS)
07. Seven & Seven Is (LOVE)
08. Crossroads (CREAM)
"Feedback" is RUSH's first studio release since 2002's "Vapor Trails" which debuted at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 320,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Lee recently told Billboard the group may begin work on a new album next year.
As previously announced, RUSH will commemorate their 30th anniversary year by playing dates across North America, as well as in Europe, where they have not performed live in more than a decade. The first leg of the 2004 "An Evening With Rush" tour will kick off on Wednesday, May 26 at the AmSouth Amphitheatre in Nashville, Tennessee, wrapping up with an August 22 homecoming concert at Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre. Following the conclusion of the North American trek, RUSH will begin their European journey with a series of sold-out shows in the U.K., starting with a September 8 date at London's Wembley Arena.

Ex-RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE Singer ZACK DE LA ROCHA Missing In Action
Source: BLABBERMOUTH
Former RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE frontman Zack de la Rocha's long-promised debut solo album appears to be in limbo, according to project collaborator DJ Shadow. "After our session . . . Zack was supposed to finish the rest of the album with another producer," Shadow explains in a post on his official web site. "He apparently never showed up to those sessions . . . Why? No one seems to know."
As previously reported, De La Rocha spent several years working on the much-anticipated solo album that is expected to surface through the Epic label. The singer, who left RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE in October 2000, has been collaborating with a number of artists on various songs that are set to surface on the upcoming CD, including those with NINE INCH NAILS' Trent Reznor, ROOTS' ?uestlove, THE GORILLAZ's Dan the Automator, and CYPRESS HILL's DJ Muggs.

Re: Weekly Music News
Black Sabbath to Headline Ozzfest
Source: RollingStone
Ozzy Osbourne will thaw Black Sabbath for a headlining slot on this summer's Ozzfest tour. The concerts will be the first by the legendary metal troupe since 2001.
This year's roving festival offers a horn-throwing nod to more than three decades of classic metal. In addition to Sabbath, Judas Priest (recently reunited with original frontman Rob Halford) and Slayer will also be on the bill. Superjoint Ritual, led by former Pantera screamer Philip Anselmo, Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society and Norwegian black metal mavens Dimmu Borgir will also play the main stage. Slipknot, Hatebreed, Lamb of God and Otep are among the fourteen second-stage acts. "It's definitely the heaviest bill we've put together yet," Sharon Osbourne told Rolling Stone.
The newfound interest in the classic metal bands has been fed by a series of recent reissues. Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath was released in April and collected all of the group's studio recordings. And this week, Metalogy, a new Judas Priest box set was released. There are also plans for a Slayer retrospective later this year.
As for Ozzfest, the mayhem begins on July 10th in Hartford, Connecticut.
