Volume 2 – Don’t Drop the Ball
Recently, I was catching up on some rolling stone issues I hadn't read. I was reading an article on the band Phish. In the article it described how Phish, infamous for their jams and improvisational playing, practiced for them. In rehearsal, they would in some cases play blind folded, or switch the drum kit from a right handed setup to a left handed, play different instruments, etc... All for the sake of tuning their ears for what each other were playing and to keep themselves from getting stuck in any style or sound. They brought back to life, what originally started as an exercise used on stage by some early great Jazz players called "Don't drop the ball".
So we tried this out ‘virtually’, here at Guitars101 and it went over really well. See http://www.guitars101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31068 . I’d like to try and coordinate another.
The idea behind this is to get a few volunteers up front in the following categories… Drums, Rhythm Gtr 1., Bass, Rhythm Gtr 2., Lead Guitar, Lyrics/Vocals. First person supply the Drum track, then pass it to the 2nd person for Rhythm Gtr 1. and so on and so forth…
1. Drums
2. Rhythm Gtr 1.
3. Bass
4. Rhythm Gtr 2.
5. Lead Gtr
6. Keyboard
7. Lyrics/Vocals
Lead sheets, tab, etc… should not be expected. This is all by ear and interpretation. One big canvas, being moved over to the next artist to lend their creativity and style. There are a lot of different styles from one participant to another. You may be looking at a piece that is not necessarily your genre of choice… This could be a very cool and interesting thing to some, while scaring the stuffing out of others. Be prepared for that when deciding to participate. Also, be prepared to mix your part right into the track you receive (this wasn’t a problem in the first collaboration). For the sake of the best final product, I am asking that in addition each participant mix a second track with the first couple beats of the click in and their own part. Just incase. If it becomes necessary to adjust a final mix at the end using each persons individual part we can do that. Hold on to that second track as you may be asked to forward it at the end if needed.
Other than that, I’m hoping for a good turn-out of participants. If we’re really lucky, maybe we’ll have enough to start 2 collaborations going at the same time (2 teams) and put them into a friendly battle when they’re complete.
I’m going to be in and out most of the weekend but will try to pop in to see who’s volunteering. Let’s get a lot of volunteers for this one!!!

Hey All Yall!!
Doing Volumn 1 was not only a privilege but extremely fun!! I had a blast! I'm not going to volunteer for this one cause I don't want to be a fun hog, but I do want to say I hope whoever volunteers for this one has as much enjoyment as I did in the first one.
HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!

I would love to be a participant...I am just not sure where I would fit in? I play the guitar and try to do some vocals...but I need a lyricist for the words...? If I can be of help, yes I would love to be a part of this! Thanks.

I'd like to add a lead, since I don't sing, or play drums, or bass...

The way I'm seeing it now... we're starting to have enough for 2 teams. If we can get another volunteer for drums (i think if we only have 1 drum track, it can be used by both teams), nroberts can do 1st Rhythm. rockonthis can do rhythm 1 for the other team. Slob and Rythameen, can each do a rhythm gtr2. 3fingers and I can share lyrics and vocals (i can help write and help with backups) kain can do leads for one of the teams, and rythameen, 3fingers or SLoB can do leads for the team that they're NOT doing their other part for. We need two bass volunteers and another lyrics/vocals person/combo. I'll always try and work everyone in some how, others and repeat interests are still welcome. So what we still need is listed below. Get the word out if you can...
Needed...
bass 2 volunteers
drums 1 volunteer
vocals/lyrics 1 volunteer

Who is doing drums in the first one?
If you don't find bass for both then I can just do the two in the first one.

We still need some representation on the drum track. The only volunteer was nroberts, who also volunteered for Ryhthm gtr1. Since he is going to probably do the 1st rhythm part for his team, the drums are an open item. Could you do the drums... different is good, the wilder and off the beaten path... the better.

I'd like to have you do rhythm gtr1, and if it's cool with VH, he can do the drum track. I think it would be interesting to start both teams off with the same drum track... and we can see the differences that happen from there. Rythameen made a reference to the game telephone, in the other thread in orginals. This might be very much the same, starting with the same track for both. If you're up for doing a bass track, you can do the rhythm gtr1 for one team and a bass part for the other. I will do the other bass track and do the lyrics/vocal partnership with 3fingers for the team that I'm not already doing the bass for. I want to make sure that nobody has more than one part per tune. However everyone can do another part as long as it's for a different team. If you can do a bass track as well, then we just need a lyrics/vocals volunteer(s) and we can get both teams going.
If anyone knows a singer/lyricist, start coaxing them to come on board LOL.
