4GB = 3.25GB in windows :(

how stupid is that? I put 4 Gig in my pc, 2 Gig per channel and windows doesn't see it. Mobo Bios does but win xp home is bloody useless due to its 32 bit architecture. I can't find any way around it. any ideas?

And does it compromise the performance of the dual channel ram?

Porty, it should be picked up correctly, not like when you buy a hard drive and it's actually LESS than the proported size. The system I am typing from now is reporting AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2000+ 1.26 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM.

This is my wife's PC and it's running WinXP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

It's not the bus speed of the memory in the BIOS is it ?

I only say this because when I first got my Athlon, I put it in and it was reporting only a 1.6 GHz processor rather than 2.0 GHz. I had to go into the BIOS and select the currect bus speed and then everything was fine once again...

apparently this is a flaw with WinXP (Cue some Linux comments )

I have read that the 32 bit version of windows has trouble seeing anything above that due to 32bit registers for ram addressing.

This is nothing to do with memory holes in the bios because the board bios reports 4096GB on startup.

I suppose I could get the 64bit Win XP but then run the risk of all manner of incompatibilities. If only they did cubase for linux

There's that WinXP 64 bit update from windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Would that sort out the problem ?

Let me search for the info dude !

I saw the empty slots and ram is pretty cheap at the moment £59 for 1Gig DDR2 533MHz so I bought another 2 Gig
