I moved this thread into the amps section for more exposure.

To answer your question, I had the 5150 II head. It's very much like the original, but they added an extra preamp tube to get a nicer clean tone. They also added an adjustable bias.

You can still get them from Peavey...the 6505 and 6505 plus.

The combo is similiar to the heads, but half the power.

The heads are LOUDER THAN HELL if you crank them up.

I haven't played the 5150 or 5150 II. I have heard from more than one person that the 5150 does not have a pure clean sound.

How are the 5150 cabs?

I have a 1996 5150 combo.
I retubed it with JJ's and put 2 low gain tubes in the V3,V4 positions and the rhythm channel on mine sounds great clean.
I also run my combo thru a Marshal 1960AX cab with a BBE sonic stomp in the loop and it sounds killer.
The combos and the heads are biased differently, the combos are biased much warmer than the heads.
the II's are voiced a little differently than the originals, better clean , but I've heard many don't like the high gain tone on the II's and mod them back to the originals.
If you can grab a combo for under $450.00 that's in good shape I would jump on it.
these are not one trick ponys if you take the time to retube them and either run an EQ or a BBe sonic stomp in the loop.
what style of music are you going to be playing thru it?

I've only played the 5150 combo. The 2 things I would suggest is getting an eq pedal and putting it in the loop, if you want a little more variety of sound. And possibly a noise gate for playing at higher volumes.

I've had no problems with the clean and have never understood the few times I've read of people complaing about the cleans (I turn the pre-gain DOWN, I think mine cleans up nicely, with stock tubes). As for the half power statement regarding the combo, I don't know how much more power you'd need unless you're in a wide open space with no PA, my combo with the post gain on 4 is painfully loud in a bedroom and makes the windows rattle. Lead channel has some high gain hiss; but the rhythm channel, a good bit of pre-gain, the crunch button, and some volume has a nice bit of dirt without the hiss.

Only problem I've had was picking up some stray radio signals if plugged into a specific outlet in my home, but I believe that is due to the shitty wiring in my home.

I've heard everyone say that its an incredible amp, but its one of those that you gotta sit down with and set-up how you want it! Because I once played through one at a gig, we were the support act and just used the headliners gear, and I couldn't get a good sound of it for crap!! But then as soon as he set-up it just sounded incredible!!!

I've had modfied marshall's, randall's, crates, peavey's, you name it and I think the 5150II has a great tone. Don't get me wrong, all the other amps mentioned were good, but I prefer the EVH sounding amp. If I want to sound like Judas Priest I'd use the Marshall, sound like Yngwie, use the crate, sound like crap use Peavey.....

I would tell your DAD to buy it. Shit it's free 'ain't it?

I have a 5150 combo as well using JJ tubes. Also run a BBE Sonic Stomp in the loop. Love the tone. What others have said is correct. The Combo is more then loud enough for pretty much any setting. Never heard a combo as loud. Will you get Fender clean out of the amp? No but its not bad. Just roll the gain down and you will be just fine. Sturdy amps as well. Word of warning. Its a noisy amp. However I do run a BOSS noise gate in the loop as well.

Just buy a SPLAWN QUICK ROD, nails the EVH sound. Check out their website and the sound clips, killer tone. I sold my Engl powerball and Cornford Hellcat as the Splawn just killed them tone-wise, I'm a rubbish guitarist but I now sound like a top pro
