I bought some Altec Lansing - VS4121 computer speakers and they SMOKE!!!!! Only $70! Couldn't believe it. Really loud and lots of bass (I have to turn the bass knob almost all the way down!). Almost no distortion when turned all the way up. Here is a link to a product description...

Altec Lansing - VS4121

I need to upgrade my moniters also, and these speakers sound like a good deal but are you using them to moniter or just general purpose use?

Well, both I guess. To be honest, I am no professional studio engineer, so I do not understand what makes a set of speaker "legitimate" as far as being labeled "studio monitors." These speakers I got basically act as an amp with 3 speakers (sub and 2 tweaters) that can be plugged into anything that takes a 1/8" jack (or any adapter that fits a 1/8" jack.....i.e....a 1/4", the red and white stereo cables, etc.). These were sold in a computer store, but the sales guy assured me that they are in no way limited to use on computers. The 2 tweeter speakers are just made small enough to conveniently fit on a desktop by your computer. Otherwise they can be used for any audio source. But as to whether or not they are "studio monitors" I could not tell you. What I CAN tell you is that they are pretty loud and have a lot of low end, sound very crisp on the high end stuff, and have very little distortion that I can tell.

No Pro either, I just understood that monitors are not supposed to color the sound at all, but my so called monitors have bass and treble knobs that add or subtract tone. So I guess I don't fully understand the concept.

You are absolutely right Ax. Reference monitors are supposed to be flat response. And as such you will hear exactly what is recorded with no colour. therefore if you are listening music in general you hear the sound as is. There are tweaks you can so through win amp and whatever for playback though. To be honest I prefer listening to stuff from this site through my monitors as apposed to the 5.1 surround speakers (currently gathering dust in the cupboard)

Good monitors come at a price. I use Behringer B2031A's and I recommend them highly. They are far better than the Edirols I had for a similar price. Also have a look through this forum because this question has been answered before. I recommend these but they may a bit out of your price range.

I am not aware of the alesis m4s - have you got a link? For the record the Behringer Truth B2031As are powered 150w monitors. they do a pretty decent job too. But you really have my interest with the alesis ones

Go get yourself the new polk audio speakers. i bought some rated for 500 watts @ 2 ohms and they sound awesome, the ones i bought have 3 speakers per cab, and have a passive crossover. they are DEFINATELY the best speakers i've ever seen/used. I dont know where you might be able to buy them. i got mine on eBay....
