$300 but you could find it for $200 if you shop around.

Stupid question alert. What exactly are you guys calling a sequencer program?

I open up Adobe Audition, import a midi track (that I find all day on-line), and it plays on my drum machine. Is Adobe my sequencer software or is a sequencer used to build the midi file?

Sorry VHfan, I missed this the other day. Yes AA has midi support and also plug in support,

Hey there,

i wonder why no 1 has recommended buying a simple midi masterkeyboard yet.
It saves you from this unimaginative uncreative 'programming' thing on the piano roll. You can map the keyboard so that u have one or even two complete drumsets on it.
Just click on record, rock on, and u get what u play .
Meaning velocity and correct timing information (depending on what 'timing grid' you selected evry note snaps into its correct place) gets recorded and can still be edited in the boring piano roll.

While this might not be the most beginner friendly idea (setting up the keyboard, mapping etc.) it should pay off in the long run. I just ordered a decent midi keyboard because i want the drums that i hear in my head, immediately, or they're gone .

Furthermore u can do different stuff with ur keyboard as well; lay 'carpets of sound' (dunno if that word fits, in german it does ) or just play a piano; good plugins out there.

hope this helps
Greetings, Flo

Good call Flo - a midi keyboard is an excellent idea too. I stick to programming simply because it is what I am used to. There are benefits to both methods though and also disadvantages too. Hand coding is accurate yet slow wheras keyboard entry is fast but performance has to be fairly accurate (then of course you have to set up quantise to get good alignment.

My thoughts on this would be to combine both methods and then you have the perfect drum entry system.

Good call on the midi keyboard idea

Did anyone mention Jammer Pro or Band-in-a-Box? Those programs let you pick a music style and plug-in the guitar chords to your song, and then it "composes" the drums and other backing instruments such as bass and keyboards. It's fairly easy to insert fills and breaks. You can export your work as a midi file and use that to trigger your drum machine if you want. It's easy to mute the backing instrumentation if you don't want it. If your recording software edits midi, then you will have more flexibility. Jammer Pro starts for about $100. I've had good luck with it. With these programs you don't need much knowledge about how to play the drums.

"Sonar" or "Cakewalk Studio"

someone at samash reccommended band in a box....but after much research....heres my plan.....a $200 drum pad midi controller......prefferable over a keyboard...and "Sonar" or "Cakewalk Studio" at $100.....anyone use both programs and can reccommend which one is better...and is the midi control neccesary...couldnt you just do it on the comps keyboard
