I'm new to recording with Cakewalk so I have a question that may seem simple to some of you, so when I start to record a track, where should the mixer levels be set generally? I just guess and set em in the middle, record, and adjust up when done for volume. I do the same with the main. Is this what most of you do? I use Guitar Port main volume.
Try to get them as close to the top before they peak. When I set my guitar up and adjust the level on my POD, they seem to come out nearthe top anyway...it's rare I even bother with the console view but as long as you're not getting any clipping, you'll want as strong a signal as possible.
You're going to want to monitor them while you record but before you start recording play what you are going to, (just a little bit of it), to set the levels, adjust them so that it peaks at -6, (or just barely hitting the red), so you don't have clipping or overmodulation. yeah, for each track get as hot as you can so it does not clip, but remember when you add more trax that you'll have to turn each track down when moxing. Also if you working with a vocalist or miking somthing, play or sing as loudly as you will on that particular track checking the reading levels. It's better to play a little lower than clip, because you can't take that disortion away. Also if you level wasn't hot enough, remember under edit (i think) you can adjust your volume 3db lower or higher. Also remember if you use the EQ option wich is nice it can also adjust your actual volume level. Hope that helps.
