Direct amp recording - need help
hi all
for the last 15 years i've been recording my home guitar track pretty simple - guitar-amp-cabinet-mic-mixer-pc
for a certain reason, cabinet has to be omitted for some time so here's the big question - how can I record guitar amp (i use JCM8000 and peavey 5150) STRAIGHT into my mixer?
I guess I have to use some kind of "middleman" between amp and mixer otherwise i might burn everything...so, the big question is WHAT TO USE? My budget for this is about US$600 so any advice will be more then appreciated

oh, yes, almost forgot...Direct Recording Preamps like Line 6 Pod, VOX tonelab etc are out of question, i can't use that stuff...i just hate guitar processors that emulate distortion without at least of dozen tubes

Just curious. Are you looking for something like the Behringer Ultra-G DI box with a 4x12 simulator built in? It sounds like a 4x12 when recording. I'm not sure if that's what your looking for, but if it is check it out.

Behringer in general is a piece of crap. the only thing they made and it acctually doesn't destroy the sound is DDX3216 mixer. ebeything else is waaaaaaaaay beyond "a good piece of equipment"....

To each their own I guess. I use the Behringer Ultra GI-100 w/the 4x12 emulation and I get a great thick sound. It compliments my DOD G7 preamp quite well.

And you DON'T get an extra ammount of heat coming from the lack of impendance in DI? Are you using a dummy load of some kind?

I use it strictly for recording to my PC. My set up for recording is:
strat - rack EQ - DOD G7 preamp - Behringer GI - PC soundcard
I use a 4X12 cabinet when I jam but otherwise that is my setup when I record.
I think the issue with Behringer, from what i've read, is that since the price is so low, it is hit or miss with the quality of a piece. Someone gets a bad one, someone gets a good one.

nonoononono...that ain't the way man, i'm talking 'bout using you BIG GUITAR AMP HEAD for recording STRAIGHT into mixer (silent recording) with dummy loads and stuff...preamp ain't the solution...

you might want to try an isolation cabinet. I have read good things about them but never tried one myself http://www.jlhproducts.com/axetrak/

I am in no way defending Behringer but your statement would only seem to hold true in a live scenario. Usable sounds for recording are far more forgiving and convincing with basic mixing competency.

You seem to know what you need already....a dummy load will do the trick.
