direct recording in a not so direct manner...

well...i've been recording directly thru my GNX3 into my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS soundcard...now i want to use the tone i've been getting from the Peavey Express 112 combo ive had forever...

alas, i have no mic's...

my question is, could i somehow, using my gnx and combo, record directly?

i was thinking that i might be able to run the gnx thru the eFx loop in my combo, then never return the signal, just send it direct to my soundcard...but i dont know if this would have too much push and burn her up, or if it would work at all

plz help, as i'm getting a sick ass tone from my peavey and i would very much like to start using it to record...
thnx

If you reduce the gain you shouldn't burn up your soundcard. I sometimes will go out of my Peavey Basic112 by using the Headphone out hehe... of course it is simply mono at that point rather than stereo...ughh, but then I add stereo effects in post through Audition.

But the trick is to turn the amp volume level all the way down and turn on your PC. Play a CD and adjust the PC volume level.

Now, while the CD is playing, bring up the amp volume slowly to match and you should be good. I haven't burned up a soundcard yet doing it this way.

Not sure if the FX send will work or not... you could try it I guess.

I've got good news for you, irongolem85!

The effects send on the Peavey Express 112 is a standard consumer Line Level output at 10-dbV. This means that you can directly wire the output from the Send to the Line Input on your soundcard.

However, without a signal coming back into the return, the amp will be silent. (You will hear in in the sound card, though.) You ~can~ use a Y cable, and split the signal by sending half back to the return and half to the soundcard, but unless you are very lucky you'll get some hum coming out of the amp along with your guitar.

I've done this one several different amps back in the day, and it works fine, but the sound you get will be really harsh sounding. This is because when the preamp signal is pumped out through speaker the coloration of the speaker and the enclosure cuts a huge amount of high frequency information, boosts several mid frequencies, and adds it's own phase distortion.

You can get acceptable results by rolling off the high end, boosting the mids, and --believe it or not-- applying a flange effect (try between 1-4ms, no modulation). It's still not "real" sounding, though, but with some experimentation you'll get close.

Good luck!

just buy a mic.. it will sound so much better, amp moddlers are great but dont have as good a sound as an real amp. if your gonna use your moddler as a fx unit add it via send returns to your comp after youve recorded your amp tone for max flexabilaty
