help with how to setup for recording

Aight guys i want to record my playing, i have what i think is good equipment and the right equipment, but i am kinda confused on how to get the best sound. Below i have included my current setup for recording and the results as well all my equipment.

Currently
i record with a mic into my MD player. then i capture from the MD player to the comp. and edit with cool edit pro. or i mic right into the comp and record that way. unfortunaly this gets me hissy noise.

Here is what i have

-5150 COMBO
-Peavey Adverb 3 processor (with midi in and out)
-Peavey wolfgang special
-Sony MD player
-Soundblaster live value (with midi/game port)

looking for help on how to connect things like the midi, from the processor,, and stuff, is that possible?
Any help would be GREAT and dont spare the details.....

thanks

Not sure really mate. I believe you would plug the output of your amp or whatever into the procerssor. THen link the output of the processor to the soundcard via midi line. I dont know for sure though, just a guess to be honest. I suggest you play arround with it! Always fun!

You'll need something to get the sound of the combo into the amp and a mic ain't usually good enough to catch the tone at low volumes. Have you a sequencer like Cakewlak or Cubase or Guitar Tracks Pro that will allow you to record digital sound direct to the hard drive? Thats your first port of call. Then you'll need something to sit between the amp and the pc so they can communicate and get your raw sample onboard. I'd find it impossible with a combo but some of the guys use them and get good results but they're usually going into a digital recorder. I'd suggest you get a unit like a Sansamp, Pod, Guitarport or V-Amp and make your life easy for recoding in the house. Either that or buy a digital recorder as your MD won't let you control anything but level.

You need to mic your combo. Running a direct line into that "soundcard" will sound horrid. A speaker emulator box will improve it alot if you want to to go direct.

If you mic, you will need a mic (sm57 is the best guitar mic at any price) and a mic preamp.

Crumb made a key point....a good mic and a preamp. You should be able to get an SM57 on E-bay for about $50.

As far as a preamp goes I use a Tascam US-122. It's more that a preamp, it also has a built in DAC (which replaces your soundcard) and connects to the computer with a USB cable. They are on E-bay for about $130.

You will get a very good recording of your combo with this set-up.

The easiest the cheapest thing to do would be to buy a Behringer V-amp2 on E-bay for about $100 and away you go.

Listen to the track "Electric Chair" in this months contest. EJ and I did it 100% with V-amps.
