Live Recording Suggestions?

Anybody have any suggestions as to what current software would be preferable to record live instruments? I'm limited to input via the microphone jack on the computer and using a Dean Markey soundhole pickup on my acoustic guitar -- and I don't anticipate recording either vocal or midi tracks.

Along similar lines...what do you use, what do you like or dislike about it?

have a look at the sticky post in this forum. there are a number of free programs which may do the job for you. http://www.guitars101.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23886

I use Cubase SX2, it is well supported, I like the results I get and it is (rightly or wrongly) regarded as the standard which other daw's (Digital Audio Workstations) get judged. Downside? It costs a packet

'Preciate the reply, but I was also kind of hoping that we could get a discussion going of the pluses-and-minuses of what's out there, to get an idea of what might work best for my use (and my budget). I had seen the sticky post you referred to, and was looking for a little more depth.

I use various mics to record my wife's cello. I don't know what you are specifically looking for info on though. I mean I mic it up and connect the mics to the XLRs in my preamp and record using Cubase SX, which I use the most, or any of the other various programs I have that are similar. The trick is to have good mics and a very sweet preamp.

I have found that the best way to record an acoustic guitar is the old way....just use a mic (I have the standard SM57) and plug it into a good preamp...I use a Tascam US-122 which has a USB interface to the PC, but there are much better preamps for more money.

I now use Adobe Audition which is very easy to use and is very inexpensive.....(search this site and you will find out just what I mean). I can't really compare it feature by feature to cakewalk or some of the others, but it will do everything you need.
