I have started doing some recording at home and it doesn't sound that great (usually using line-in from amp or computer mic). I am looking to get a better sound card, small mixer with phantom power options and XLR connections, and maybe 2 mics since I play out of 2 amps to get the sound I like.
I was looking at the Shure SM-57 which sounds like a popular choice and at around $100 seems like a good start. I think spending $100 for a first mic is acceptable for me.
What other mics should I consider in this price range?
Since I need 2 mics does it make sense to get 2 different makes/models so I can find which works best with each amp and have different tones?
Hello , stick to the sm-57 , it`s one of the best , considering it isn`t a fake , there are many mics available but this is a classic -one , i`ve used it for many things such as for guitar , bass , drums , percussion , etc. , even for vocals.
Be aware it is a genuine because there are many immitations , which do also their job , but the real one is the finest.

I was going to order one from eBay that was packaged as new. Do you have any examples of fakes?
As an amateur it would suck to get a fake mostly because I probably would have no way of knowing it was a fake. I would just assume my recording sounded like crap
just check the buyers rep... if it's solid then it's probably not a fake.
Besides the shure 57 check out the Sennheiser e609. Nice thing about that is you can just hang it off the amp. I ususally use both mic, the 609 just left of center and the 57 pointing at the cone.
