New to the whole Idea of using my computer to record... any suggestions?

I have recorded with an old tascam 4 track for a while and love how easy to use it is. I got a Fostex FD-4 a few years ago and with exception of messing with it a few times I cant get into it. After hearing some of the Demos on this site I think I want to use computer based software to record. The only thing is that I have no idea of what software to get or other equiptment I may need. I went into my local Guitar Center but felt like they were pushing a product because of their commission, not because of it being a good sounding easy to use product. What I am looking for is something I can record my guitars and maybe create a few back tracks to make up a complete song... any ideas???

What kind of computer do you have?

Would you mic an amp or use a V-amp or POD?

Software = Cool Edit Pro free compliment of Pete )I love you, Man!)
$100 for VAmp2 amp modeler between my guitar and sound card.

Samples:

I only use a few settings on my V-Amp, so it does more than I could ever imagine at half the price of a POD...

EJ,

You make a lot of sense. I also use Cool Edit Pro (thanks Pete) and a V-amp Pro. For drums I use a Boss DR-670 I picked up on E-Bay for $100. I have a 5150II and tons of pedals and mics....and a room full of other stuff. But for recording guitars all you need is a Vamp or POD and some software. It's fast and easy.

Is that a Maiden tune? Sounds cool.

Many Thanks. The song is "Killers" from Iron Maiden's Killers album. One of the first Maiden tunes I learned back around 20 some odd years ago... Overall a great album. Check it out sometime
