The Sm57 is a great mic for recording electric guitars but obviously there are hundreds of different mics out there and they all do something slightly different. If I have any advice to someone just starting recording then get hold of as many different types of mic as possible to hear what they do. You need a dynamic, a condenser and a ribbon.

all the best
John

The SM57 is an awesome mic. Here's some tips on placement. Having the mic pointed directly at the speaker dead center accentuates the highs and the closer you get to the edge the more bass you'll get. Just a little tip that's been use ful to me. I do one dead track dead center and then double it with one near the edge. Mixed together they sound HUGE!
