Recording Audio Playing on the Computer

I've just got a new laptop and a Tascam US122 external soundcard. I have my guitar plugged into the US122 and it records just great BUT it seems that that is the only thing I can record. On my old PC (witout the US122) I could change the input to record from Line In/Wave/Microphone etc. and I could record sound files playing on other programs (like Guitar Pro 5) with Kristal or Audacity but now I don't seem to have that option on the new laptop.

Can anyone shed some light on what I've missed? Are there settings I can change that will allow me to change the input so I can record these files again? I know the US122 doesn't allow recording of things playing the computer, but is there no way I can make the laptops built in soundcard do this?

Thanks.

I run the same setup as you....US-122, Laptop. Do you have everything set to the US-122??? Ya know...control panel, sounds and audio devices, set everything to be done with the Tascam....midi, recording, playback, etc. Then disable your internal soundcard. I record while playing back, audio..midi...no probs!!! Just make sure everything is using the 122, and disable your internal soundcard....should work!!!

So if I make sure the internal soundcard is complete disabled I should be able to (for example) play a MIDI file on GP5 (or whatever) and record it using another program like Audacity/Cubase/Kristal etc? At the minute if I want to do something like that I have to put a cable from the laptop into the Line In of US122 and record it through that.

I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks!

axslinger is an unknown quantity at this point
You are talking about recording a file that already exists on your computer. Example: If you just export a GP file as a MIDI file and then import that file into whatever recording program, you would have the same thing without having to record in real time. Or am I misunderstanding something.

Well I've been doing that as well, but it was for some other things I wanted to record in real time as well, but I think I've found a way to make it work.
