Recording Guitars
To all you guitar players out there, I need help. I'm just a dumb singer/bass player and I'm having trouble getting a good guitar sound to my disk. Are you guys recording direct or are you mic'ing your amps? If so, how do you recommend mic'ing them? If you're recording direct, is the sound dry, or are you recording with effects? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Recording Guitars
What I do is go direct from my Johnson JT50 amp...I use Cakewalk, it has built in effects, great for reverb, delay....I did experiment with micing my amp....but with the type of amp I'm using it's much better direct....Most guys here use the Line 6 POD...great choice to record with, very clean & big sound....lots of options...just do what works best for you....

Re: Recording Guitars
I was having a 'mare trying to get any decent sound out of my amp, because I could never crank it up. I could, but it wouldn't please the neighbours or the wife.
Well, <font color="green">Canyon Carver</font> on here always used a Line 6 Pod 2.0. <font color="green">El_jalapeno</font> and <font color="orange">Scott Parnell</font> both used a Behringer V-AMP 2.0. Some other guys got Line 6 POD XTs (<font color="green">wahwah</font> and <font color="blue">ericgtr</font> amongst them).
Well, eventually I realised how easy it was for them and more difficult for me. So I snagged a POD XT off ebay. I think most people on here will agree that my sound has improved immensely since then.
The Line 6 range are quite pricey for some, but from what I have heard from other's samples, you can't go wrong with a V-AMP which are generally half the price !

Re: Recording Guitars
If you don't have an amp simulator and need to mic an amp.....you really need a preamp in front of your soundcard to get a good sound.

Re: Recording Guitars
I just record straight from my amp though a very very cheap mic. I use no pre amp or anything, just straight recording like u record your voice throgh a mic. Check out my songs i uploaded to see the sound i get. I think its pretty good. I am jealous of these POD's though

Part of the FUN i have in recording, is that I get to improvise, If I have a cheap mic I try to make it into something interesting, like put it in a box w/ foam or packing plastic to avoid any interference from outside (such as echo). I was reading Jimmy Page talking about recording Bonzo's drums and how distance from the mic and drums allowed for the sound to breath. Effects pedals are fine they even work on my Keyboards ( piano, organ).
Experiment, and don't rely too much on expensive tricks and $.

There are a million different answers for that question.........all of which are correct
Everybody has their own tricks and tools, I personally was never able to find the tone I wanted using amps and micing them, so I use the POD X3L, and I get great tones in my recordings. By in order to get those tones I had to get a good set of phones and dial them in, then test them in some recording and tweak until I found what I was looking for. So many thing can colour of affect the tone it is unreal......all I can suggest is your experiment and find what works for you.
I personally bought a really cheap Behringer mic and got good results with it, others will swear by more expensive makes and models....experimentation is the key.

I use trusted SM57 to mic amp..
Having said that, its much harder to record this way to achieve nice tone..You dont end up hearing exactly what you hear due to room ambience, mic, placement, etc.
Easier option is to run line out direct out of a unit like POD or GT, or direct out of amp. You can get some nice tones this way too...i use both
