This is in reply to kmanick's question about Cool Edit and Sonar 4
As far as multi-track recording goes, don't even bother learning how it works in Cool Edit if you already have Sonar4. Cool Edit started out as a WAV editor, and started adding in multi-track capability toward the end of it's life. It works, but it's very limited. It is however, a FANTASTIC tool for editing and tweaking audio files.
I have both tools as well in my studio. I use Sonar exclusively for recording and multi-tracking, and Cool Edit for opening up a WAV file and tweaking it a little.
A couple tips about using Cool Edit with Sonar:
- The newer version of Sonar will not automatically detect and add Cool Edit to the Tools menu anymore. (This is nice, because you can select a track, hit Tools->Cool Edit, and BAM! you are in Cool Edit. Save and exit Cool Edit, and Sonar synchs the new WAV back into the project... Sweet!). However Sonar Utils (www.sonarutils.com) will do this for you, and it's FREE.
- Adobe bought Syntrillium (the makers of Cool Edit) a few years ago, and re-named it Adobe Audition. Just on principal, I have NOT upgraded or purchased that product. (Adobe has gotten really good at making "bloat-ware" these days, and Cool Edit was perfect: lean, mean, and easy to use.) So if you are looking for an updated version, check out Adobe's site.

Agreed

I've been using Adobe Audition 2.0 for several months now and it whips the crap out of 1.5. Feature wise, it's up there with pro tools and doesn't require some proprietary crap front end interface to use. (Although I'm using an M-Audio Fast track pro which happens to be one of those said front ends!)
Anyways, unlimited VST and other plugin support, video editing, very good built in mastering tools, midi, you name it, it's got it. Unlike protools, audition doesn't limit you to a certain number of tracks. It's pretty much only limited by your PC's power.
It's not cheap by any means but it is a VERY good alternative to protools and won't require an expensive hardware interface to use it.

I use and highly recommend CREAMWARE products for the PC COMPUTER. www.Creamware.com is in Germany and there are music stores in the U.S.A. that sell Creamware music recording products. I use Creamware's older products... the TDAT16 audio card, A16 rack mount digital/analog converter with 16 balanced inputs and 16 balanced outputs, and their TripleDAT software which comes with many effects (EQ, Reverb, delay, limiter, compressor, flanger, chorus, transposer, de-esser, and more) along with the absolutely necessary SPECTRUM ANALYZER and VU METER for mixdown. www.creamware.com Creamware's new recording equipment comes with built in SHARK processors taking the load off your computers CPU, built in samples, and built in synthesizers. This equipment is as good or better than PRO-TOOLS and the price is very affordable... they have many pricing options.
I have been using Magix Audio Studio 2004 for a couple years now. I have had pretty good luck with the exception that I sometime have an issue with the record device recording the previous tracks along with the new track. I can't figure out what gets changed, but it does it all the time and I can't figure out how to prevent it. It is a pretty easy program to work with, and I am sure it is something that I am doing wrong. I run my guitar thru my POD XT Live, through a Tascam Portastudio for the mixer, and then into the PC and record direct. It works well, but I am probably going to upgrade to Music Studio DEluxe 11 this week. Good Luck, and anyone who can help with my recording issue, please reply. Thanks, G
id like to try riffworks but dont really want to pay unless someone else has tried and thinks its worth the money i already own sonar4 and adobe audittion just wondering if riffworks is better with xt live?
i own riffworks 2 the biggest complaint is the lack of drums.i also bought sonar pro 4 and thats what i use for drums.is riffworks the easiest way to record i think so its awesome for layering your guitars easily i dont use sonar for anything except midi and mixdown now.i recommend it
I have a toneport and there are plenty of kits to purchase. whether they are worth the investment is another matter but they sound pretty good.

Fruity Loops 6 works very well for recording as well, I'm using that now and, although it can be a pain, it has really good sound and lots of editing options.

I got toontrack's EZDrummer. AMAZING software. very easy to use but although it says it will work with fruity loops, it wouldn't recognize EZ. I had FL XXL installed and I followed the troubleshooting steps on teh forums but they didn't work.
I did though, get acid pro 6 and man that junk ROCKS. EZ works flawlessly and the depth of editing control of the midi groove sequences is mind boggling. You can alter the types of drums used, mix and match kit components, speed up the groove or slow it down to whatever BPM you want and even edit in or out certain hits in the kit.
Definately something worth checking out for under $200, it's a freaking steal...not to mention the expansion kits.
If you click the link in my sig to hear my sound clips, there's one called "Test Groove" that is just a simple drum beat I put together and then just randomly messed around with. The playing sucks but you get the idea of how the drums sound.

Goport has awesomely sent me this list of links to some of the best software packs out there ... some great info right here so check it out if your wanting to get into recording ! thanks again Goport .. killer stuff !
Recording Software
Just a list of Audio Software to help get people started with recording. I have probably missed quite a few packages so if you want to add a link it would be most helpful.
First up the free stuff!....
Pro Tools Free http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/ Very cool provided you are running W98SE or WinME. If not it won’t work. Basically this allows 8 audio tracks to be recorded and a number of midi tracks.
The NOT free stuff. (prices in US Dollars and taken from www.Amazon.com. These are cheaper than the list prices but if you shop around you may find them cheaper)
Cubase SX http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/- $399.00 /B0002M6RSU/qid=1098446190/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2_etk-software/002-8090311-4440051?v=glance&n=229534 Professional version of above (this link refers to cubase SX 2 which has now been superseded by SX 3. SX3 features are similar to those of Sonar 4 Producer Edition.
Protools is expensive and requires proprietary hardware to run it. You can't just use any old sound card you have laying aroudn. You have to make sure it's Digidesign approved
that being said, I've tried PT M-powered with my M-audio stuff and wasn't impressed. It was decent but not worth the price IMO.
