Recording Software

Just a list of Audio Software to help get people started with recording. I have probably missed quite a few packages so if you want to add a link it would be most helpful.

Pro Tools Free http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/ Very cool provided you are running W98SE or WinME. If not it won’t work. Basically this allows 8 audio tracks to be recorded and a number of midi tracks.

Magix is very good. I used Music Studio 2004 and I know 2005 is now out. Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro...I have version 2 and 3 and it rocks but it lacks even one damn midi channel.

This one looks pretty good! It seems great value for money. I have their Music Cleaning Lab software and it's quite neat, if that's anything to go by, I should check the Music Studio one...

At the moment I use Synthfont to assign soundfonts/VST fx to midi tracks, export as wave, and then I import the wavs into PowerTracks... Powertracks cannot use VST instruments or soundfonts... if Magix Music Studio can, I'll buy it straight away so that i can stick to one program for everything.

So, Evhmoon, does it work well with midi/soundfonts/VST?

I am a Unix Admin, been at it since the mainframe days. I am a huge Linux advocate but I have to tell ya, nothing on that platform performs like the windows and mac software. Cubase, Samplitude, Sonar...that's where it's at. There is nothing available for Linux, sadly, that even comes 1/100 of the way.

I'll pull you out of the killfile long enough to respond to this...it is important enough.

There is a big difference between being a unix admin and knowing the ins and outs of the current state of the art in Linux audio. I am also a unix admin and programmer and am just scratching the surface on what linux is capable of in the audio area. Linux audio has taken leaps and bounds in the last couple of years and is going in directions totally foreign to these other systems. To dismiss it out of hand is just silly. Pro studios are actively using Linux for recording and mastering. It is definatly good enough for the average home user and even semi-pro home studio....and it is totally free in every way.

Do these software packages have everything pro-tools does? I don't know. Does pro-tools do everything these packages do? Well, not according to many on the Linux audio list but I have never used or needed pro-tools. It has gotten to the point that it is definately worth the bother to try Linux to see if it will do what you want before investing big bucks in pro-tools and friends because you may not have to.

About the Mac. Interestingly enough much of what Linux has to offer will work on Mac including apparently Jack and Ardour. I guess you can even patch itunes into a Jack network and gain all the benifits this of course brings.

I'm trying to use Cubasis 4 with PatchMix....I'm just learning but so far it seems to be a pretty fair deal....I got the software with the Emu1212 and 1010 aux cards...

I think the new M-Audio comes with recording software. Anyone have thoughts on the new Black box from M-audio?
