I'd get a decent mic, like the Shure SM57. I love it. You should also get a decent recording program, like Adobe Audition, Ableton Live, or whatever you can make work for you. I'd also start doing research into how to record and mix instruments so you won't have to do it by trial and error. But other than that have fun and keep it rockin!

I found the best way was to research and learn by doing google searches. Use keywords such as DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), Home recording, digital recording, Home Studio, I/O (in/out) interfaces, sample rate, Sequencer, Midi (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), Anolog Vs Digital, A/D/A converters, Wordclock, Audio Cables, Mixing Consoles, Reference Monitor Speakers, Patchbay, etc.

If you do the research you will know exactly what to look for then you are in a position to try stuff out.

Good luck, and it's great to see a young guy taking the initiative to learn about such a cool subject.
