Very General Recording Question

i recently formatted my C drive and installed Windows XP, before this, i used my mic input for my guitar, and computer mic ( for fun) recording with my Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2, and after i installed XP.....the mic input no longer worked...it just didn't pick up any signals at all....so i tried the line in, and that worked for my guitar, but what is weird, when i put my computer mic in the line in,....it doesn't do anything.....? i record fine with my guitar, but when it comes to my mic, i don't even get levels , is there like some sort of signal thru the mic that wont work thru the line in? could anyone fill me in on why this isn't working? Hmmm . . .
If you go: Start>Control Panel>Sounds And Audio Devices
Then click the "Volume" tab>Device Volume>Advanced
Is the volume of your mic input turned up?
That's a place to start.

Re: Very General Recording Question

Your line input and mic input are set for different levels. The computer mic doesn't have enough output power for the line in to even pick it up. This is normal. The line input is better for recording instruments anyway. What kind of computer and soundcard do you have? You can usually download updated audio drivers for XP for your system from the manufacturers website.

That's a standard onboard soundcard. What computer do you have HP, compaq, dell?

That's what it sounds like....

Try going here and letting it detect your serial #, then they will show you what updates are available.
