Build my own. Much cheaper and much more of what I want instead of what a store wants you to have.

Re: What computer do you use?

I built a dual athlon system (2600+x2) running two 180 GB hdds in raid with 3gb pc2700 ram. I shopped for all the parts at a market pro computer show (I go regularly). I put the bulk of the system together for under $800 USD

I added an m-audio firewire 410 interface afterwards for 400 bucks and a 8x dvd+/-r/rw to backup all my data to for 120 bucks. I have been building my own boxes since my first PC and the one I just described has been working beautifully for me for recording. I still run Win2k on it and have felt no need to upgrade to XP yet. I, too, work with computers so I just use a pool license from work on whatever OS I want to install on what I build. Sometimes I even "borrow" from the office

Cheers...

Re: What computer do you use?

I have an Athlon 2400+ on an ASUS NX7X (or something like that) motherboard.

512 MB DDR RAM.

2 Mirrored 160 Gb HDDs.

Windows XP Professional on there.

Built it myself too. Old Motherboard died on me, so I upgraded. I begrudge paying lots on computers, so only pay the bucks when I have to.

Serves it purpose for recording, but I hear good things about Macs for recording. They're supposed to be built for it and make it extremely easy. CanyonCarver's your guy for Macs though...

I built my own (after knocking my knee on the tower for 3 years ) I ordered a 19" rackmount server case and installed a Gigabyte MB in it with a Athlon XP Processor and a stick of 512 megs of DDR,Soundblaster Live ,NVidia Video card and this sucker is Fast!!!!!!!!! I use Cakewalk Sonar 2XL and Windows Me and have never had a single glitch...

1GB 2700 RAM

120 + 80 GB HDD's
DVD+/- RW
NVidia 5700Ultra

It is ok but it is beginning to show it's age lately.

Re: What computer do you use?

I use an iBook G4 1gig laptop and a G4 Powermac 800mhz. I love using Pro tools on a mac. its has never crashed on me and it is much easier to browse for files. I work in the IT feild and deal with XP Pro all the time. I like XP for Business apps but for Video and Music you cant beat a Mac. The processor speed is faster then a pc's and there are less problems between apps working together. On my PC I tried Pro Tools and it was just a pain. It was a 1.2 gig processor and I noticed alot of latency issues as well as memory problems. Go with a MAC and you will be much happier in the long run.
