Which gives best sound?

Hi,

I currently record direct into Cakewalk guitar tracks pro 2 from my guitar to my soundcard via a digitech RP50. What diffence in sound / tone etc would it make to the uneducated like myself to record into one of the home studio digital recorders ( Boss BR600) for example. Basically is it worth spending the dough?

Cheers.

it all depends on the quality of your soundcard. A basic pc sound card is very poor for audio recording. Whereas a true audiocard like an audiophile 2496 is excellent.

Thanks for the reply Goport. I have a basic one I think. Are audio cards like the one you mentioned expensive and would you know if they are easy to fit? Would they sell them in places like PC World or Currys? Sorry for all the questions!

hey no problem mate.

the easiest way to upgrade, if you are worried about opening up the pc, is via a usb soundcard like the M-Audio Fasttrack - these are more than sufficient and costs about £60 from http://www.dv247.com/invt/24169/ - or anywhere else.

its a good basic interface with a guitar input and a mic input. The only real difference between this and the card I mentioned earlier is slightly increased latency times. but it is good from the easy-ology perspective.

Another and probably more interesting option is the new Line 6 Toneport GX. the hardware is cut down to just one input and one stereo out but the software is the same as the more expensive toneports and that includes 23 amp sims and 30 fx.

http://www.dvguitars.com/invt/43353/ - it also supports the guitar port online service and lots of other cool stuff. Excellent value for money.
