5150-II adjustable bias

i own the 5150-II head...and ive noticed on the back the bias adjust, but ive never touched it, because i dont want to mess anything up...although...id like to see if i can do this on my own to get my tubes a little warmer

how can i do this by myself safely without messing up my amp?

ive had my head back from peavey since march (it had to be rebuilt due to faulty parts), since then ive played it many times, and have been on tour with it, i may need new tubes in the next month or 2, but if i can get a little more life out of them for just a little longer so i can save up money, id be happy...

when i change my tubes do i need to get only power tubes?...or pre amp tubes also?...i heard those last alot longer...

but more importantly, i need advice on the bias adjust...any advice?

That's an awesome head. The bias adjustment, I think, runs the tubes hotter if you turn it clockwise, colder if you go CCW. Pre-amp tubes usually don't need to be replaced that often, and I wouldn't mess with those if you're happy with the overall sound. Power Tubes, on the other hand need to be replaced at least twice a year, more if you use it all the time. I wouldn't change the tubes anyway unless you noticed a difference in the sound. As for experimentinfg with that bias knob, go for it! Just change it a little at a time, because Peavey tends to bias their amps a little colder than what I like, producing crossover distortion, which is an underlying buzzy-ness. This does prolong the tube's lives a little bit, but it doesn't sound as nice as when you run em hot. Hope this helps.
