Amp MOST similar to a Jcm 800

Well guys(and gals) i'm really trying to get a specific tone here but the Jcm 800 model's today are too expensive. im willing to buy something around the 1500$ range that has the same sound as a jcm 800. Ever hear Iron Maiden's older album's. Their tone came from Jcm 800's (Adrian smith used an ibanez tubescreamer) . Also judas priest's lead tone from " the Green Manalishi" and "sinner" is damn amazing and i know they used older marshall amps for that sound.

Marshall these day's doesn't impress me much so i'd like to invest in a full tube amp that will get me these older metal tones with a great lead sound which is very important to me . Any amp can get a nice rhythm sound but its the lead where the guitar shine's.

So peeps, if you know of any amps today that are similar to a jcm800 lemme know it'll make my day to hear of a nice amp.

El Jalapeno swears by his B52 AT 100 head. And that would be right in your neighborhood.

Hey Talon ... you still got your V-amp?

I just acquired a vintage non Master Volume Sound City 120W tube amp for pennies off of ebay (£132 GBP / $200-$210) & My V-amp Pro sounds AMAZING through it. An added bonus is that because it's harder to drive the preamp tubes into saturation without a gain/master volume combination, they don't colour & 'choke' the modelled sound - which is always the perceived problem when using a modeller to drive a guitar amp. I can even use the tube head's eq to tweak my sound and it don't sound unnatural ...

Like you, I was getting disillusioned with my Vamp through a 200W SS poweramp and Behringer 4x12 and having to push my volume much harder than the other guitarist with his Engl 50W tube 1x12 combo + 1x12 extension cab, just to be heard - not to mention the 'missing' tone, compared to through my PC.

Now, it just sings straight into the front of my 30-yr old tube head & then into my 2x8ohm stereo 4x12. Maybe you could try & fnd yourself a non-M/V tube amp/head (and not necessarily a Marshall - therefore maybe not 'too' expensive). Let the Vamp provide your tone & let the poweramp add the warmth, 'growl' & 'bite' we all love & which only really seems to come from simmering - not frying - tubes?

just my $0.02, before you commit, when a just a little 'extra' effort may have solved the tone gap for you ... besides, JCM800? .....bloody MARVELLOUS sound (I used to have one of the originals '86 - '91) - but you're only ever gonna get a marshall tone/OD out of it. Where's the versatility?

I have a buddy who owns a Gibson amp from god knows when. non master volume twin reverb style. He used a boss metalzone and it was sick with that pedal. I guess ill have to try the vamp out on that amp! Either way i'd like to gig with something usuable so im still gonna look for a newer style amp. Thanks for the info.

Take a look at the Carvin MTS 3200 It has alot of the older Marshall tone to it. Well within your budget as well.

Just keep your eyes open. I have a JCM800 2204 head that was mint that I picked up for $600. BTW I have lots of amps, modelers etc. and nothing compares the the real deal. It'll be worth the wait.

Take a look at the traynor amps too. I've got a 50 watt YCV 50. Not the most powerful amp on the planet but it's got a great old school metal tone.

If you can find one, the Carvin Valvemaster or X100B would also fit the bill for VERY cheap. I got my valvemaster 2X12 combo on ebay for $250. The X100b heads don't fetch much more than that either.

Take a listen to my VM with this old school rock/metal clip. It was spliced togeher from a few different clips with different EQ settings and the end with badhorsie was done with my kramer. the rest was done using my Carvin DC135.
