Owned one, and agree (almost) completely. If you want metal tone, this amp on it's own doesn't have enough gain and is pretty mid-oriented. So the only thing I don't really agree on is the 80's vibe (I have an ADA MP-1, now that's 80-ies early nineties high gain stuff

). If you'd like palm mute tight punchy metallica-ish rhytms, this is not the amp you want. If you like FAT crunch, this is it. Vai sounds like he uses a nice deal of gain; but the balls in his sound come from the fact that he plays his amps set tremendously loud. I had the combo with 2 vintage 30's. well, at home I simply couldn't get past 1.5 on the volume. the amp really awakens at 6-7, which would make my house collapse. it is indeed loud as hell. the lead tone was not my thing, but the clean was maybe the nicest I've ever had.
