Crate Red Voodoo

Any of you guys ever tried a Red Voodoo? As much as I like my Marshall combo, I do miss that tube crunch I had with my 5150. I've seen those red voodoo's go for a pretty good price on ebay, and I'm thinking about checking one out.

Re: Crate Red Voodoo

I like the Voodoo but solder joints are an issue with it. I had a BV combo that I liked quite a bit. There are better deals out there, get a early 70s Traynor Bassmaster and set it to Plexi specs. I got mine for 260.00 and the amp is nothing short of astounding. PTP, zero reliability issues. They might be the best amp no one knows about. I won;t ever sell mine'

Re: Crate Red Voodoo

I'm weighing all my options here cause I wont be buying the amp till about July or so. I'm also looking at a solid state amp by B-52 pro audio. I read some reviews on it and it sounds like a very solid amp. Im gonna try and see if I can find one in my area so I cant plug in and play. But right now the Red Voodoo, and the B-52 are my two options.

About a Traynor Bassmaster, do ya think I could find one on ebay? And do you have any reviews on it. Thanks

Re: Crate Red Voodoo

Go tube, unless you are gonna get a Line 6 , tubes are really the way to go. I wouldn't trade my Traynor for any current production amp, ( I am serious) it is the same amp as a 60s Plexi with a few minor tweaks. It is also loud as hell, not a master volume amp. You gotta attenuate it. IMO there is nothing like a cranked amp, I have a vintage tweaked Plexi RI, an early 70s Carlsbro I got from Terry Kilgore and the Traynor that was Terry's recommendation. Each one gives me shivers when I crank em up. The Crate isn't in the same ballpark as far as great rock tones go. It is a cool amp, but it ain't world class cool. If you search Harmony Central there are Traynor Bassmaster reviews. If you get really intrigued I might know where you can snatch one up cheaper than the current Ebay prices. They are amazing amps, but it is early 70s rock tones all the way with them. My personal favorite.

Thanks so much Kevlar. I'm gonna read up on the Traynor's, and if I'm interested I'll drop you a line for sure.

Re: Crate Red Voodoo

I researched the Traynor's and they are worth a listen...but good luck finding one....they seem very rare.

Re: Crate Red Voodoo

I have your 5150, but the crate voodoo series that i used to have is doo doo in my opinion, Sure sound great for sammy hagar tone,- But I want EVH damnit not the sellout dudes amp. Anyway i still have the 5150 and it is cranking really loud. the combo is almost as loud as my full 5150 stack. Well anyway I was just jerking your cahin about the voodoo, they are fine amps.

Re: Crate Red Voodoo

I'm glad you posted cause I wanted to write ya but had lost your email addy. I'm glad to see you're still puttin the combo to good use. I'm pretty much set on gettin a 5150II so the red voodoo is out. I really dig the sound out of em though, and in the future I might get one if I have the extra money.
