Feedback problem

Any suggestions on reducing feedback on a dirty channel? I'm playing a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL. When we gig, I try to stay at least 10 feet from the amp so I don't get any feedback but that usually doesn't work. I only have the gain set on 5...any suggestions?

Re: Feedback problem

Hmm. Well for one...i guess try to go even further from the amp. My ears personally like the sound coming out of an amp better, the further away from it i am anyways. You using heavy compression? That can be a factor. Other then that i dont know what to say.

What kind of guitar? You may just need a better pup, or even a cord change for your guitar cord.

Quick fix is to pot your pups in wax, then shield the pup cavity on your guitar which will help as well, but still too many unknowns. Give us more info.

A good noise gate is one place to start.

Re: Feedback problem

I'm not using any compression and I only use two pedals, a Crybaby Wah and a Boss Blues Driver. I'm playing a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender American Strat. I never thought about cords. Other than a Fender Tweed, which I run from my guitar to the pedals, I'm using cheap cords......

Re: Feedback problem

Think you can get them in pedal form but look for a rack mount Alesis 3630 (think thats right) or go all expensive and get something with 'hush'. Line6 amps have built in noise gates and they work by a threshold setting that cuts back al the noise. Be careful tho as you can take alll the guts off the sound away especially on quiet passages.

Re: Feedback problem

If the tubes of your amp are old (really old, approx +2 years)it may cause this feedback probs.
The cable prob is another, if they are too thin and would make noise if you shook them, change them against another one. Check the plugs also, I have had some which are a little loose and causes some problems with sound and feedback.
There are tons of reasons, anyway you better check the whole signal way from the guitar to the amp.
The easiest way to do so is, guitar to amp direct wired, first cable - test - second cable - test - pedal to amp - test with different gains and volumes w/o guitar - and fianlly guitar-cable-pedal-cable-amp. So you can find where the problem is.

Yea you have a good point there about noise suppressors. I have some patches on my rackmount that use both compression and noise suppresion. So the NS kind of works as something to lessen the extremity of compression. But yeah. Noise supporesors will do the trick.

Re: Feedback problem

You guys have been real helpful. I think I'm going to try to invest in quality cables first and go from there. Thanks!
