Wow,
I just read the link you posted to the Metal head, that amp seems insane! Do we need all that? Maybe not, but I still want to hear it (with earplugs)!

Yeah, I really don't think it's necessary. It sure would be fun though!

Nice to see that Fender's trying to compete with Marshall, in terms of wattage...
But yes, I'd give it a shot.

Wow...that looks like one extreme amp. Fender finally joins the ranks of the metal crowd. I'd like to test one out.

Yeah, well lots of watts doesn't always mean louder (there's this thing called efficiency), and it certainly doesn't guarantee that it sounds good. 550W solid-state isn't gonna get me away from my all-tube Marshall stack....
Friends don't let friends play through solid-state amps!

Well, I do know what efficiency is. I would bet that 550 watts, regardless if it is coming from a solid state would be pretty loud (according to Fender it was loud enough to set off car alarms). I'm proud of you for having an all tube Marshall stack, however.

well,, I have to agree with yopu about tubes sounding better. I have to say lately though,, that solid state has really come along way though. and to me,, fender amps are better than marshalls. I tried marshalls before,, and they didnt suit my sound needs. I own a fender twin that will blow ya off the stage with the loud 100 watts. who knows if these 550 watts is powerful? only time will tell when its out on the market for all of us to test. it autta be a monster if they are gonna make it that much wattage. when it comes to fender amps,, the wattage is there. fender dont lack in wattage. my twin is 100 pure watts and that amp of mine when cranked up,, will have your chest poundin from the power it puts out.

I don't see 'em as better or worse (Fender vs. Marshall), per se; they're different tools for different jobs. Fenders are cool, but I strongly prefer the tube jobs - I've owned a couple in both SS and valve. The best Fender I've ever played through was an old pre-CBS black-face Super Reverb...way cool (and one of the best amps I've ever heard, regardless of brand). Still tubes, though. What style do you normally play?

Which Twin? Tube or SS? It makes a difference, because the power dissipation rating systems are different for tubes vs. transistors. It has to to with the range of the linear portion of the conduction curve for the device. The ratings are based on the linear portion; for a transistor, the linear portion goes almost all the way to max current, then it clips hard. With a tube, the linear portion ends much lower in the total available range, then gradually flattens out. This is the reason that overdriven tubes sound warmer than overdriven transistors; it's also the reason that 100W tube always seems louder than 100W SS. There's more 'extra' power available above the linear portion (and therefore, the rated output).
Also, keep in mind that all else being equal, it takes 10x the power output to get double the volume; i.e., 10W is twice as loud as 1W; 100W is twice as loud as 10W. 550W would be roughly double to SPL output of a 50W amp rated in the same manner. Louder? Yeah, probably. Enough to really make a difference in any real playing situation? Probably not.
This is like horsepower ratings in cars. They're good for bragging rights in the magazines, but almost irrelevant in real-world use.

It probably is solid state, cause in order to have that much power with tubes you'd need a bunch of power tubes. 4x6L6+5x12AX7=5150 madness. I have said it before: you just can't beat my 5150. Not for tone, and who would actually need 550w? Seems like Fender may be "compensating" for something...(: whisper: bad tone?)

The reason why they are making it so much power (much like the Marshall Mode 4) is so it can push a lot of low end when you tune down.
5150's (Which I would consider myself VERY familiar with having owned one) simply cannot push the same amount of low end as....say a 500W bass amp. Sure they are loud....any amp can get loud....but as frequency goes down, the power needed to reproduce it goes way, way up.
You are usually limited by the speaker cabinet you are running anyway....the speakers will peg long before that amp reaches full power....but they seem to have loaded it up with 100W Celestions so it will get very very loud if that's what you need.

This amp is like a "Magnum" Condom: Sure most of us carried them in our wallets, but there was never a time we could actually use the damn thing!

550Watts is overkill.
My Peavey Basic112 (I play through a bass amp...just a preference of mine) is 75w and it is more than enough for a small/medium sized club.
