Re: Peavey 5150 combo

Is it the Mark 1 or 2 Eddieman? The main difference is in the clean channel but a lot of people say the combo clean channel is superb compared to the head. They are amazing amps...only amp I've had that has TOO much gain! Only ever wind it to 6...any more and it's silly. Loud as a nun who's discovered that Dildo wasn't a 14th century Priest! Re: Peavey 5150 combo

Go with Marshall. Look around here and VHforums and you will see many folks swapping 5150's for Marshalls. Ask Sucka what he thinks of his Marshall that he swapped his 5150 for...

The 5150 is just too much. Hissing all over, and a guy I know had problems with switching between channels and we always had this highpitched squeal. Real friggin' annoying when you are trying to play a tune and you get that feedback with that gain. You can't go wrong with Marshall.

Check out the AVT series. I have a half stack 50 watt head for around $850 brand new, so I am sure you can find a good deal on them. PM if you want some samples of my live tone, and talk to Sucka.

Re: Peavey 5150 combo

I just sold my combo and bought an old Butcher I like much better for 200.00. I think anything over 600.00 is a bit high for those amps. My buddy has a VTM ( the father of the 5150) and I like it more as well. The buzzy gain really ended up bothering me too much. I tried 12AT7s, the low gain input ect and that amp just does not breathe well to me. You can surely get good tones but those extra peramp tubes hurt the amp a bit IMO. No where near as organic as my current lineup of heads. RI Plexi with set to 68 specs, 72 Carlsbro TR 60 ( amazing!! I got it from Terry Kilgore with assurances I would love it) and a 71 Traynor Bassmaster set to Plexi specs, ( another tone stunnah) and finally the Butcher which is not as good as the others but will be once I get the bucks to mess with it a bit. Great amp though....

Re: Peavey 5150 combo

hey guys...I am a 5150 combo user but I dont run my guitar direct to the amp main inputs....I do a effects send/return connection...it is just awesome....believe me...the only setback i have right here where i stay is I cant use the footswitch if i do a direct input cos of the difference in voltage...

I think it must be that Marshall are British so we don't get glassy eyed over them over here but I was looking at a Valvestate 2000 with the DSP and the shop had had 20 in and every one of them had gone back because they blew. I have had about 12 Marshalls and I would say the best ever was the Jubilee...it was a mean fucker and I had no problems. I wouldn't go for a new Marshall from my recent expreience. The 5150 is noisy but no more than any other valve amp I've owned. If your mate had problems there was obviously a fault cos I've had nothing like that in 18 months. Re: Peavey 5150 combo

The 5150 is a beast when it comes to hissing, I know. I used a ROCKTRON HUSH for that problem. I tested some MARSHALL amps and found the 5150 was the sound I wanted! I did have to deal with some noise, but the tone I got with my set-up was worth it! It's just a matter of your taste and opinon. Good luck!!!

Re: Peavey 5150 combo

For the bucks a mid 70s MV JMP would be very solid. If you are into the true Plexi vibe then an early 70s Traynor Bassmaster with a couple simple tweaks will be extremely close to a Plexi 1987x. They have giant transformers and as a result have a bit more bottom than a stock Plexi. At 350.00 or so it is extremely tough to find a better sounding amp. PTP handwired and durable as hell. I got mine for 260.00 and it sounds as good as any 2000.00 boutique thing you could ever plug into.

Re: Peavey 5150 combo

I'm selling a 5150 head...never had a problem with hiss...I use an mxr noise gate pedal but I hardly ever turn it on...it's crazy! I'm asking $500 plus shipping costs.
