I have owned a Boss GX700, a J-Station, a V-Amp2, and a Vox Tonelab. The first three and the last three co-existed, so I was able to compare them pretty well.

I now have only one.

V-Amp2 does it for me.

Other - i.e., I don't use a modeler - don't need or want one. I play through a Marshall 3203, and ADA MP-1 or a Bogner Ecstasy.

and you probably have very understanding neighbours

A "real" amp is good when you have a good place to practice/rehearse with a band etc. But when you're at home, when you just want to pick the guitar and make some noise for a while... a modeller is just the thing. No hassle, no disturbing anyone even if it's 2am...

thanks for all the replies, and keep them coming. I am surprised at the number of behringers hanging in there with the basic pod. and boss too. Didn't really expect to see that.

I disagree. Your amp and the response that it gives will drive subtle changes in your technique. I prefer to practice with the same gear I play with - it serves as a continual fine-tuning of my sound and technique.

Granted, this won't work out very well if you live in a small apartment and you have a 100W non-master Marshall.....

I have POD II with the Floor Controller for live.
At home for practices Sansamp GT2, Behringer Vamp and Rockman(Tom Scholz)
I just bought the Line6 Toneport UX2 last week, and i'm loving it.
I am using that one for recording.
I have a Crate Vintage Club30 amp, but i hardly use it.

how do you find the toneport ux2 compares to the pod II? I have the ux2 and I only use it for bass because I don't much like the way the patches seem to soften up the 6 string. Can you tell any difference between the pod and the port?
