Which tubes are compatable?

Joe King,
I recently bought a Crate v1512 and am really happy with it but i find it has too much gain. I have been thinking about replacing one or all of the preamp tubes from 12ax7a to 12at7 or 12au7 tubes which have a lot more headroom. Can you tell me if these are directly compatible or am I going to blow something if I put these tubes in. Thanks.

My Fender Hot Rod de Luxe has developed a problem on the clean channel. Basically the clean channel no longer sounds clean and has lost a fair bit of output. Does anyone know if this is likely to be a preamp tube or maybe some other problem?
Thanks in advance.

I have a 1978 Fender Princeton Reverb, and, at times, I've gotten into changing the tubes on a regular basis. But it always seems to be that you just hear something in your amp that doesn't sound as sweet as it should be - that's the time to change the tubes.

Since I don't have to bias the Princeton's tubes, I simply replace the tubes one by one until I get it back to that sweet spot.

Of course, sometimes, it's more than one tube that needs replacing or something else in the chain that's causing the problem. But this approach, at the very least, brings the process along.

As far as speakers goes - that's definitely the kind of thing you just know!
