Veterans Stadium

Thankfully this blight on our society was reduced to rubble today. Unfortuatnly, most of the fans of Philadelphia sports teams were not injured.

Re: Veterans Stadium

LOL keep it up Wip and i'm gonna start a petition too get you banned bro! I actually went down too the Vet yesterday too take some pics of it and just look at that place. Yea the playing field sucked, but I had some great memories of that place. My mom took me there too my first Phillies game. I got too see some of the best athletes in their respective sports play on that turf. Reggie White, Scott Rolen, Mike Schmidt, Curt Schilling, Randall Cunningham, Cris Carter, Andre "Dirty" Waters, Ricky Watters, Bill Romanowski, Mike Quick, man I could go on and on. That place may have been a fuckin hovel, but I have so many fond memories of that place.

My favorite Vet memory was a MNF game in the mid 90's. Cowboys vs Eagles, 4th and 1 and Barry Switzer calls a draw play too Emmitt. He takes the ball and is stuffed at the line of scrimmage, but the play comes back cause of a penalty. Switzer being the genius he is calls the same play. Emmitt takes the ball and is STUFFED again! That's the loudest i've ever heard a stadium get, and I will remember those two plays forever.

Oh yea, and fuck the cowboys!

Re: Veterans Stadium

Here are my memories of the Vet:

* A myriad of batteries being thrown at Santa Claus during an Eagles playoff game
* Michael Irvin nearly breaking his neck during a game and Philly fans CHEERING
* A Bears reciever (can't remember the name) blowing out both knees during a preseason game

Yup, great place. Good riddance.

A place that's been around that long can't be all bad, I'm sure there are plenty of good memories there. I have a lot of fond memories of Candlstick Park also, I went to plenty of games there as a kid.

Re: Veterans Stadium

First of all, it was snowballs being thrown at Santa not batteries. The Batteries were thrown at J.D. Drew, and I believe it was ONE fan that was caught throwing them. You gonna critisize a whole fan base over one guy?? Also the fans were throwin snowballs because this guy was skinny and ragged in a fuckin Santa suit. He looked NOTHING like the real thing and it was somethin that was thrown together at the last minute by the orginazation. The guy even was interviewed and said he thought it was funny that they were throwin snowballs at him. That story gets blown WAAAY out of proportion.

The Michael Irvin thing, I know cause I was there. The fans weren't cheering the fact that he was laying there half dead. The fans were booing Deion Sanders who was drawing attention too himself in what he called a prayer. The guy was circling around Irvin and the medical staff in what looked like some native american rain dance. It was ridiculous and uncalled for. You wanna pray for a guy then you get on one knee and pray like the rest of your teammates. You dont draw attention too yourself especially in a hostile environment such as a visiting stadium. Nobody every brings that up on ESPN though.

The Bears thing I cant defend. The turf was horrible for years and there's really nothing you could do about it. It was a carpet over concrete and i'm not even exagerrating there. Yea the field may have sucked, but that doesn't take away from some of the amazing games played there.

I was there when Reggie White announced that Jerome Brown had died in a car accident. I was at many of the games in 1993 when the Phils went too the World Series. I was there too see Jim Thome alomost single handly carried the Phillies into the post season last year. The Vet may not mean shit too alot of ppl that arent from around here, but too me that place held a dear spot in my heart.

Re: Veterans Stadium

I've never lived in Philly so I shouldn't generalize about the fans. I'm sure there are some great memories there - I just didn't experience them. I do remember Reggie announcing about the untimely death of Jerome Brown and how he and the crowd handled it with class.

Philly sports fans are a passionate bunch and I respect and admire that. There is no such thing as a fair weather fan in Philadelphia. I hope that the new buildings keep the passion that Veterans Stadium so often ignited.

Re: Veterans Stadium

I always wanted to get to a game there, but living so far away it was'nt plausible. Maybe I'll get to an Eagles Game one of these days.

You let me know whenever you wanna go too a game bro and i'll go with ya. The new stadium is unbelievable. You're really on top of the action there unlive the old vet. The only thing I have a problem with is the swirling winds inside the new park which reaks havoc on our kicker sometimes. Other then that I love it!

Re: Veterans Stadium

Speaking of stadiums. I was having a talk with a friend this morning and we got too talking about the new Jets facility that is being planned. The cost will be..get this..1.4 BILLION dollars!!

That is a ton of money for a football stadium. I mean, I know it's NYC and everything, but come on! I thought the Eagles stadium was a bitch at 400 some million, but this is just crazy. I'm glad i'm not a tax payer up there that's for sure. You can read more about it here:

Re: Veterans Stadium

$800,000,000 for a stadium and another 600 mil for convention center improvements. smoley hokes.

in 1999 Nashville spent 290 million on the Titans stadium. We thought that was high....Looks like we got a deal.

Re: Veterans Stadium

It's insane. I mean I know it's New York and everything but come on! It's football people, and the Jets aren't anywhere close too being America's beloved franchise. If I were a tax payer up there it would take a blow job from Britney Spears everyday with my morning coffee too make me feel better about the tax raise.
