Re: wondering??
LOL no Soccer is not our greatest pastime that's for sure. What's the worlds greatest sport? hmmmm..It's the least popular sports here in the states, but I'm going to say hockey. It has a little bit of everything in it. Boxing with the fighting, and let me point out that fighting on skates is a bitch. Then you have the basketball aspect with the different kinds of passes, like saucer passes, or drop passes. Then there's the baseball aspect, when players smack the puck out of mid air with their stick. Football with the hitting, and soccer with the use of the feet to kick th puck up to the stick. And I cant forget the speed skating, and figure skating aspect of it. So hockey gets my vote as the greatest sport in the world.

Re: wondering??
I'd have to vote for Aerobics Oz Style !!! (Sky Sports 2, early hours !!!)

As for the greatest Sport in the world, I just simply have to say Football (Soccer to our American friends). There's nothing like the beautiful game being played beautifully.
When you watch a team like Arsenal play with Thierry Henry on the ball, you just know something magic is going to happen. Or Real Madrid when Zinedane Zidane gets the ball, the same magic is going to happen. That's just two of the obvious choices, but there's so many talented players out there.
Plus, with the English Premiership there is the likelihood that on their day, any team CAN beat any other team. Not week in, week out (unless you are Arsenal), but every now and then, an upset can happen.
Also, the near non-contact nature of the sport means you have to rely on pure skill most of the time (that's why Blackburn Rovers are so way down the table, ).
But there's no greater feeling to me than when your team puts that ball in the back of the net. Especially against one of the bigger teams. "Yeah, pick that one out, yer bugger !"
I've watched Blackburn Rovers claim the Premiership trophy, and I've also seen them get relegated. I've seen them go down 2-0 to Derby in the Play-Offs, only to end up winning the game 4-2, and then go through to the Play-Off Final in the second leg despite losing 2-1.
It's the range of emotions it takes you through.
Now, I'm not saying that football is unique because it has this, because others will surely get this kind of enjoyment out of golf, basketball, baseball, American Football, snooker, etc. Whilst I'll enjoy these sports, it doesn't do it for me like football does.
However, I grew up in Blackburn, very close to the ground. So every other Saturday, I'd hear the cheers and groans of the crowd, and got used to the town being flooded in Blue and White for the afternoon.
It was only natural to become a part of it and start sharing in the rare highs and numerous lows that the club was involved in. It's second nature to me now. I'm pissed off for a while if we lose (which has been quite a lot this season), and I'm elevated if we win.
No other sport makes me feel this way, but that's probably because they are too complex for me.
I remember going to a Baseball game in Tokyo. When it came to the 7th innings (I think), all the Japanese fans in the crowd started handing out these sausage balloons. It was really weird. We all happily took them. Our Japanese host for the evening (I had such a crush on her) told us to blow our balloons up (fnarr fnarr). We did so, and then just before the seventh innings, everyone released these balloons.
They all darted into the air, twirling this way and that. Pinks, greens and blues. It was an amazing sight.
However, in the last innings, they were winning 4-1. I was thinking from a footballing perspective. "3 goals, with little time left. You're so gonna win yeah ?"
My comment was met with a
They explained to me that they could end up losing heavily. I didn't really understand why, 1) because they explained half in English, and half in Japanese, and 2) because it was a bit complex for me.
I just nodded and went, "Oh, yeah, of course, I see now !" Whilst going inside my head.
So, with that I will stick to football, the beautiful game...
COME ON YOU BLUES !!!!!
