World Baseball Classic - good or bad idea?
How do you guys feel about this? I'm kind of torn, myself. I think it's great to get some international interest in the game boosted, and for guys to represent their home countries the way they do in the Olympics.
That said, I think the risk of guys getting injured going into the start of a season is silly. Then again, when else could you have it? After the World Series? Not a very good option either.
Thoughts?

It's a great idea in theory, but it looks like crap so far. Unless you get full participation from the players (whether it's their decision or their team's decision) it will be meaningless. Soccer seems to be the only sport to really pull this off, and the players seem to care about it.

Well Japan wins. I still like the idea, it needs to catch on and we need to see all the top names involved (including Japan's - like Matsui!).

Ive heard it mentioned about playing the tourney during the all star break. Shorten the season by a week and a half and do it then.
Everyone would be in midseason form, so I'm sure the games would be more competitive.
Doing it after a 4 month layoff is how the guys get hurt.

i was always confused by the "World Series" ... which consisted of teams from America only. As if America was the only place in the world.
This is a proper World thing though right? With nations from all over the globe competing ?.
Shame its such a girly sport lol

OK, I've heard this John Cleese joke before, and it's funny, but we use that World Champ thing for Baseball, American Football and Basketball and I really don't think that's a stretch. We don't call the NHL or MLS champ a World Champ...

OK, in Baseball there were no other pro leagues in the world when it was first established. Even today (and especially when it was first established) there are no other pro leagues in the world that match up to the American/Canadian major leagues. Maybe one day there will be and they will change the name. Sorta like assuming Chelsea is better than DC United, a pretty safe assumption.

Here's the John Cleese joke, pretty good!
The three differences between American and British people:
* "We speak English and you don't."
* "When we hold a World Championship for a particular sport, we invite teams from other countries to play, as well."
* "When you meet the head of state in Great Britain, you only have to go down on one knee."
