Well, Boston spanked us in last night's series opener, largely in thanks to the charity of ARod and Aaron Small (what is this, "opposite year" for Small???).

One bright spot - Melky was brought back up from Columbus while Sheff is on the DL, and collected two hits in three at-bats (he was tearing it up in AAA ball so far this year, as well as during winter ball). The one blemish in his bright return to NY ... he apparently saw ARod's two errors and thought he was supposed to commit one as well to fit in.

Yeah, well you always had to wonder how long Small's success would last. Maybe he's better suited as a starter? I don't know. I think Randy Johnson getting smacked around a number of times is more of a concern....

Yeah, I think Small's 10-0 success last year was more likely an aberration, and I think we all knew that even as he pitched last year (based on his MLB history prior to that). He definitely has something to offer still, and I think it needs to be determined what that is.

Johnson is definitely a concern right now, but I think he will turn things around, since he is his biggest critic and will work harder than most guys to make adjustments as needed. However, 5 of the 7 runs that came while he was in the game last night were unearned, thanks to the errors.

The one that really bugs me is Sturtze. The guy was phenomenal for us up until the midpoint of last year, and now he seems like a liability more than anything (why we followed up a poor start with Johnson in the game with Small and Sturtze is mind-boggling). Proctor has been a nice surprise contributor, though.

The bats have got to come alive - that is where our strength was supposed to be this year. Jeter, Giambi, Damon, and Cano have been the only consistency so far. ARod's got to get his head on straight, and Matsui needs to catch fire as well (both of them will, I'm sure).

The bats will come around, but pitching is still #1 - in my opinon anyway. Sturtze is a puzzle, was never a great starter, but seemed to be an effective reliever for a while. I think Torre is trying to show confidence in Sturtze & Small, at least for now.

Pavano & Dotel are throwing! Gotta hope for something.....

A damn shame....the 518 game streak is over, and Mats will be out 3 months.

What does this mean now?

Torrie Hunter?

Bad news, he's damn good and has come through in a lot of clutch at-bats...
