Gary Davis- 1967-07-07 - Seattle (SBD)

I'll be curious to see what interest this generates here. Other than the levels being a little low, it's an excellent soundboard recording. I doubt there's too many Gary Davis boots out there. If the Gary Davis sound is appreciated, I also have some David Bromberg I could post.

It did not come with a setlist. I filled in most of it, but was stuck on a couple. All help appreciated.

Yes, thanks a lot for this! And I, for one, would really appreciate hearing the David Bromberg. I sure do like your taste in music, noeasywayround. Thanks!

Because I was just listening to Bromberg, I think I typed that when I was more thinking about Jorma. But the Bromberg - Davis association is valid, too, and I will get some of that up.

Jorma's great, too--with Hot Tuna and solo. Thanks for being willing to post some Bromberg.

Sadly they don't allow electronic trading of their shows. They have an open policy towards audience recording, and they support mail trading. Just not electronic. The theory apparently is that tapers are a close community, and if it's limited to mail trades it will remained controlled and their music won't get into the hands of people who sell bootlegs. Whatever. It's weird, but their policies are pretty flexible otherwise you gotta honor their request.

Hot Tuna does have downloadable shows for sale on their website:
Hot Tuna Live Downloads

I haven't bought anything from there yet, but I'll get around to it. I have no problem paying for the quality stuff.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Hot Tuna shows.
I found a setlist for a Reverend Gary Davis show on July 8th, 1967, in Seattle. But, it's really different from the setlist you posted. So, I guess the dates didn't get mixed-up somewhere along the line, which is what I thought may have happened when I discovered a July 8th list. Oh well.

No, there were definitely two shows. The show from the 8th is on sugarmegs (download link here, otherwise the easiest page to start on is probably here).

A couple of things to note if you haven't been there before:

-everything is streaming quality wma's
-downloads are only from 5pm - 9am eastern time, and on weekends; at other times it's streaming only
-streaming is in .asx files, which work in Windows Media Player, but NOT version 11

There are hundreds of shows there, an embarassment of riches if you're happy with the streaming.

Thanks for the clarification on the Rev Davis shows.
Yeah, I've been to sugarmegs before, and when I download a show in wma, I've got a program that'll convert it to mp3 of whatever bit rate I choose (up to 320). I don't know if it actually improves the quality (probably not), but psychologically it helps, if you know what I mean.

Uh, no. That's why it's called "lossy." Once the information is stripped out, you can't magically put it back just by changing a number. By re-encoding an already lossy file, you only make the quality worse.

That in a nutshell is why so many music sharing systems don't allow the posting of mp3s, because people do things like that to them. I certainly hope you're not passing such files around, here or anywhere else.

Don't worry about it. Anything I download is for my personal use. And if I do post something I downloaded as a wma file, for instance, I post it as a wma file, and say so. If it came to me as an mp3, I post it an an mp3, at whatever bit rate I got it. I'm not in the habit of committing fraud in terms of the music files I post. Believe me, I'm VERY aware of the whole lossless/lossy debate, and I could go on for a long time about how I feel about it. But, I better not go there.

I basically meant my original comment in the other post about converting wma to mp3, and the psychological effect, etc, as a light-hearted comment, indicating that my priority, for me, is being able to listen to music I like, regardless of the format, bit rate or whatever. That comment was meant mostly for me, and about me. And, I don't know if it's correct, (and don't particularly care, really--but it was interesting), but I read on several technical sites that wma is basically Windows Media's own version of mp3. So, I downloaded some software to convert wma to mp3, since that's the format I'm most used to. (And some of these sites claimed that a high bit rate mp3 is slightly better quality than wma. Who knows?!) I know that I'm not adding back any info, and that it's not possible to. These technical sites seemed to be saying that, in terms of sound quality, wma or mp3 it's all basically the same. So, whatever. As long as I'm satisfied with the quality, regardless of the format, and get pleasure out of listening to it, that's all I really give a shit about.
