Genesis: A Classic Broadcast Revisited (1974)Notes from torrent:
SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY EDITION 04 The PRRP Special Anniversary Edition is a very special release for us at PRRP. Each year we prepare months in advance and try to pick the best recording available for this annual remaster project. After listening to this recording we hope that you agree that this remaster project is worthy of a PRRPSAE release.* PRRPSAE04- GENESIS Genesis: A Classic Broadcast Revisited (1974) April 21, 1974 (University Sports Centre - Montreal, Canada) 1-1. Genesis Montreal 4/21/74. Some of you might be wondering why we chose to remaster this recording for PRRP when so many other recordings of this show exist. Many of you likely have the FADE remaster group version of this show and probably agree that it is the best available recording of the event. The PRRP staff was involved in the final remastering of that recording, which we believe; at the time was an important addition to the recording archive. But, after a recent review of that work, we discovered a number of problems with the remaster that could be address now, some years later. Below is a list of the problems with the current FADE remaster that we did not address well (or at all) when we did that work. With this new remaster for PRRP, the same source recording was used and all the issues have been addressed. We hope that you agree that this makes the recording more accurate as a representation of the event and a more enjoyable listening experience.* Notes from the Re-Master* 1. More advanced noise reduction techniques used so noise reduction*is not so harsh. The FADE version was over noise reduced and likely lost some of the detail as a result. Different techniques were used for this remaster resulting in a much more natural sound. Side to side comparison of the FADE and PRRP versions will emphasize how poorly we noise reduced the former version. 2. Speed correction. The show needed variable correction in the range of 0 - 3%. With the FADE remaster, we never checked the speed of the recording. This time, we used the Genesis Archive live material and Genesis Live commercial release as standards. This new PRRP version is now speed corrected to those standards. The pattern of speed error was quite consistent with reel-to-reel or cassette tape movement. It made sense and was easily corrected. 3. Eliminate audible radio host during quite sections. A careful listen to the FADE version of this show will disclose the sound of a radio talk show announcer speaking. This was either “bleed through” from another radio station or was present on the tape used to record this show, prior to the recording process. This announcer’s voice is most obvious at the beginning, before Watcher of the Skies begins and during the song Horizons. During the FADE remaster sessions, there was no way -at the time- to deal with this vocal interference without corrupting the sound quality of the show. Here, in the PRRP remaster we have been able to eliminate this extra material. This is particularly important for Horizons where the announcer was actually louder than the guitar and ruined the song in the FADE version. Not so in this version. 4. Adjust dynamics to maximize dramatic effect of music. This was not done during the FADE remaster. Many radio broadcasts will compress music so the quiet sections are too loud and the music looses much of its dramatic feel. By adjusting the show dynamics, we hope to return to the recording some of the natural variation inherent in this early Genesis music. 5. Re-track show to separate stories from songs. The FADE group policy specified that introductory song stories should not be tracked separately. At PRRP, we have always tracked them separately and this release is no exception. 6. Attenuate tonality excesses, where they occurred. Certain sections of this show had excessive bass or midrange. During the FADE remaster sessions we were told to leave them unaltered. With a different approach used during this PRRP remaster, we made the decision to attenuate these excesses for two reasons. First, this would be done for any recording that is being prepared for commercial release, and second, it produces a more well-balanced recording that in our view is more enjoyable.* 7. Smooth crackle in The Musical Box. The source recording for both the FADE and PRRP remasters did have some crackle in a section of The Musical Box. *The FADE remaster left this crackle unaltered because the techniques used at the time were too harsh and degraded the quality of the music in those sections. Different techniques were used during this PRRP remaster with a desirable level of improvement in crackle distortion and an acceptable level of music quality. http://link-protector.com/163679/ http://link-protector.com/163680/ http://link-protector.com/163682/
