true true.. there are tools ( traders little helper) to help determine if a "lossless" file has undergone a lossy generation..

Please can I ask a question? I have been transferring all my old cassette tapes to the comp and I save each one as a wav. Then when I have split the tapes I save each track as a wav. Then I convert the wavs to flacs and store them on the other comp. As far as I know I am doing the right thing there so thats not my problem. My problem is this....If someone sent me a cassette tape of a live show I wanted and, this cassette was recorded from an mp3 sourced show, when I record this cassette to my comp and do my usual routine then how would I find out if the tape is actually an mp3 source? I usually do a spectral analysis in Adobe audition when I do my files and know exactly what the spectral analysis shows for an mp3. Just can't work it out from recording a cassette. Excuse my ignorance but its always puzzled me.

Cheers

Once the sound is compressed into lossy form (wma/mp3) no matter what you do, you have already lost what was compressed out. While you can still take the file and convert it to wave, flac, ape, or shn it doesn't restore what was lost. The spectral analysis should show that.

just do the same thing, spectral analysis. frequency cutoff will be sharp right at 16 khz if it is from mp3

Yeah, to answer the original question...it would be pointless to convert a mp3 to flac. That doesn't mean be a dickhead and give the most sarcastic answer possible. You can make your point without acting like a jerk.

Thank you. Just been going through a few using the frequency analysis option and that makes a lot of sense to me now

How many times is this going to go on?

All of you....SHUT UP!
And I say that in a 2kbps ancient RealAudio format.

Well, considering I first came to this site two months ago, and I have this thing called a JOB, and a LIFE that doesn't always revolve around this website, 10 is pretty decent. I probably haven't downloaded more than 10 or 12 anyway, so i think its a fair ratio. The ratio is what matters, if I downloaded a 100 shows and uploaded 10, your point would be valid...but it's not because that's not the case. Besides, I don't answer to you anyway. You're pretty much always here when I'm here, always bitching about someone or something. You need to get over yourself. There's nothing great about living in your parents basement and having your life revolve around collecting FLAC files and bitching and moaning about how other people choose to collect or what they collect. Obviously you don't get it though. On that note, I'm going to go shower, go out to dinner, and spend a quality evening with my friends. Perhaps I'll be back around midnightish. Don't whine too much while I'm gone.
'blacksabfan', is a wank-stain who's never recorded a show in his life. A leech who steals off everyone else but thinks he's a modern-day Robin Hood. Cares not for quality (see above). An ingrate of the lowest order.

Rucklegend is mad because I took two songs that I was given w/o conditions (which were also mp3's, so obviously you and the good ol' boys at RL don't care much for quality either) and posted them at YouTube. Previously they had not been available anywhere on the internet (anyone feel free to prove me wrong). He is in fact a 'moron' and should be taken as such.

I wonder who's most an asshole....
-FLAC maniacs who ask for quality and respect to the taper
OR
-mp3 collector who made 1/4 of the tapers of this Earth stop releasing their masters, who ask for McDo bootleg, conveniant but nevermind the quality while they are offered good sound!

Sorry to tell you this, but bootleg is NOT something for amateurs....you come in and obey the pro laws, or just abandon if you're too stubborned for that....you still can collect pokemon cards if you want!
Enjoy Pikachu and let the adults with their flacs, ok?
