This was a unique performance--Barry's first show since having double hip surgery six weeks prior. The evening
before his surgery, he had won an Emmy (American television award) for his PBS Special "Manilow: Music And
Passion." For his grand entrance at Boardwalk Hall, he rode onstage in a wheelchair clutching his Emmy,
accompanied by four "nurses"!
He broke into the opening verse of "It's A Miracle," substituting the lines in parentheses:
You wouldn't believe where I've been
The cities and towns I been in (The hospital rooms I been in)
From Boston to Denver
And every town in between
The people they all look the same (The painkillers all look the same)
Only the names have been changed (I knew all the nurses by name)
But now that I'm home again (But now that I'm well again)
I'll you what I believe... I believe... I BELIEVE! [stands up and walks away from the wheelchair]
It's a miracle!
He made several other funny references to his surgery throughout the evening. He joked that during the
intermission he was going to get some Demerol!
