COMMENT
A highly interesting release in terms of show content, but not so much in terms of the quality of audience recordings. The last shows of the London residency were always going to be special, and these do not disappoint. The main show audience recording is rather frustrating overall with intermittent sound issues which plague the first disc especially. The mics, or equipment used to record sound like they are frequently being moved/concealed resulting in muffling of the audio - not good. Add to this a fair amount of distortion on both Prince and Shelby's vocals towards the high-end, and an overall "thinness", and you have something which is average at best. The sound issues are most distracting and audible during the mid-section of Disc 1 and the 'Chelsea Rogers / Sexy Dancer' portion in particular is a rather uncomfortable listening experience. It picks up for the piano medley, which is actually rather decent, but the problematic sound means the recording as a whole only grades as VG. As for the show, it's one of the best of the 21 nights and certainly a fitting end to Prince's summer residency in London. The opening duo of 'I Feel For You / Controversy' should be familiar with most after the Sky News live broadcast, as should 'Take Me With U' which was made available on 3121.com for a limited period. The 11 minute piano medley is one of the many highlights, and although the choice of tracks performed is unsurprising, the delivery is excellent - special mention going to the screaming on 'The Beautiful Ones'. The closing portion of the show is also rather special with the sampler/loops set containing some extremely rare performances : 'Delirious' with lyrics, the opening few bars of 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker' and Prince singing the first verse of 'Irresistible Bitch' - albeit with censored lyric changes. Not to be out-done the final encore consists of a unique main show performance of 'When You Were Mine' before 'Girls And Boys' bring the show to an end. It's a real pity the audio has a number of issues which affect one's enjoyment of the show, but it is what it is. The aftershow recording is again slightly lacking and problematic in places, but is a vast improvement over the main show recording. What problems there are seem to center (again, as with the main concert) during the mid-section of the show, and in this instance it's 'All The Critics /Sexy Dancer / Chelsea Rogers' with the horns becoming piercingly painful, some slight distortion and volume fluctuation. The volume fluctuation is something which occurs minimally throughout the show, as does movement of the equipment used to record and a little channel switching from L to R on occasion - I merely point these things out as they are obvious, but in no way am I slamming this as on the whole it is still an enjoyable, above average recording. Also worthy of note is some slightly intrusive audience noise from people in close proximity to the person recording, although it's worth pointing out they only affect very small portions of the show and are not audible throughout. As for the show itself, it really is a stunning aftershow, performance and set-list. Opening with a phenomenal surprise in the form of Amy Winehouse on vocals for 'Love Is A Losing Game', it sets the standard very high for the remainder of the aftershow. The crowd (mainly) handle the vocals for '7' before the more usual 'Come Together / Honky Tonk Women' performances. Alas Beverley Knights appearance doesn't match the hysteria generated by Amy Winehouses' stepping onstage, but she does an impressive 'Rock Steady'. 'Shhh' is yet another nice surprise, and credit goes to Prince for making this version certainly one of the more memorable and powerful of recent performances. Unfortunately the 17 minute 'All The Critics' meanders into an aimless funk-jam which doesn't really go anywhere (one too many horn solo's) before the show returns to fine form with 'Sexy Dancer / Le Freak' with 'Chelsea Rogers' to close the first half. The Shelby show follows for the next couple of tracks before she's pushed into the background for another meandering jam, this time a 12 minute 'Alphabet St'. 'Villanova Junction' is a superb performance and a real highlight of the show matched by the following duo of 'Peach' (with a little 'Rock Me Baby' thrown in) and the ever-funky 'Stratus'. The closing trio of 'What Have You Done For Me Lately', 'Partyman' and 'It's Alright' are played in quick succession and bring the final aftershow of Prince's summer residency to a rousing end, the show itself ending with him acknowledging "Superstar" (think : Beautiful, Loved & Blessed @ Saturday Night Live 2006). Whilst the 2 recordings on this final edition of the mammoth "...For Your Memories" set are slightly disappointing due to the excellence of the shows content, they are audible, enjoyable and greatfully received, and whilst this is not the best volume in terms of recording quality, the stunning content of the shows in undeniable.
