These files are High Quality Constant Bit Rate compression.
This compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are deemed beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people. This method is commonly referred to as perceptual coding.

To say a file encoded in this manner is not 'enjoyable' is a bit much.

As it says in the thread, I plan on adding a 320bps download to this thread.

MP3 Compression

Firstly Thanks for all the downloads you are giving us. It is very much appreciated.

RE: Mp3 compressions. After doing research online I found that the recommended settings would be using VBR or variable bitrate at the highest setting. This uses 320Kbs only when required and lowers it in sections where it wouldn't make any difference. So you get equivalent 320Kbs quality with less space required.

I encode my files using the LAME encoder and using the command line

-V 0

This is the highest or "insane" vbr setting. Make sure to use the latest LAME version 3.98 because it uses an improved vbr algorithm. I believe it may also use a higher lowpass filter than CBR.

I understand encoder/settings can be a sensitive issue with some people so please ignore my suggestions if you don't find them useful. Hope this is helpful in some way. It certainly would save you some bandwidth and uploading time.

Thanks again!

Its very simple,
someone posts something, to share with others for free.
something that doesn't just appear out of thin area.
you spend time on it, then wait on it to upload.
then post it in a forum for others to enjoy.

then you get people that have suggestions, or they want something changed or they want more.
some even pm you, wanting it right now, 3 of those from this thread.

it takes a sh!t load of nerve to ask someone for more, a higher bit rate download. which might take the poster another 60mins to upload.

Other ppl may be enjoying this download, but I'm not.
when fun turns into work, its time to stop.

the rest of these will be posted elsewhere.

Thanks for the explaination. I totally recognize your issues with uploading and asking more (a bit different than your remark).

I recognize that especially when taking 48 hours and 5 failed upload attempts to upload something nice. After 5 posts of thanks there is always someone who asks for more being another record to be done or other band (or related).

In this case I think the upload issue is the same.
On the other hand in this case there is a bit a difference:

This is a remaster of improved soundquality that you want to share with people. You want to show them what you did and I'm interested to invest some time to listen to that work. To reflect your hard work and improved soundquality you best deliver it in the best possible way so the effort come across.
When people really like it they can burn this to cd for replacing their own copy with you copy (that's why you also offer artwork).

All your hard work (that probably took more time that an upload) becomes a bit void when delivering it at a lower standard (undermining the work).
It's a bit like pimping your car with max stuff and delivering it through a car compacter.

Again I recognize the upload and more, more, more issues.

As much as I appreciate the downloads I'm quite confused as to why you're so upset. In your initial post you state that you can post a "higher quality" version if ppl like it. No one is asking for something you didn't already state you were willing to do???

Obviously some ppl have rubbed you the wrong way, but i think they just wanted to show enough interest so you would post the higher quality version. You can't dangle a cherry in front of Fans and not expect them to bite surely.

I posted a suggestion which would save you some bandwidth/upload time. Hardly something to get upset over.

Anyway, THANKS again for your generous shares.

Thank you for the new version of GB. Just cutting all the other artists out makes it a different listen. I really flipped over the "We Can Funk". It has never been a song that I even remotely liked and your version helped me hear it differently. The "A Question of U" really dazzled, too. It is very cool to hear new edits/songs. It created a very different vision of that time (1990). I can't wait to hear what you did to Under the Cherry Moon. I suspect that willl be an easier first listen with less new music.
